Responsibilities
The Manager of Technology will be responsible for managing all technical aspects of station strategic priorities, initiatives and systems. He / She will be primarily responsible for the operation and maintenance of all broadcast systems, user systems, and mobile devices. The Manager of Technology will be the lead champion for technology in News and Production departments and will prioritize installation, maintenance and repair of equipment. The Manager of Technology is expected to manage systems from “Cradle to Grave”, encompassing the planning and management of projects from idea creation and capital approval through implementation, operation, and maintenance. Candidates should expect daily user interaction for individual and system break-fix resolution and weekly interaction with corporate resources for enterprise-wide systems and projects. The Manager of Technology will coordinate with other local and national technical resources to facilitate integration of IT and broadcast systems. Local broadcast engineering and IT analysts will report to the Manager of Technology. The Manager of Technology will manage the long-term, short-term, and daily responsibilities of the station IT and Broadcast Engineering team. The Manager of Technology will report to the station General Manager and be expected to provide guidance and counsel on a range of technical topics. Ability to work well on a team, but also be self-motivated is important.
Essential Responsibilities:
• Perform installation, maintenance, and repair of all technical equipment
• Assist in design, development, and execution of station projects with or without supervision.
• Help maintain UHF transmitters, microwave equipment, studio equipment, buildings and all other equipment associated with our facilities.
• Support maintenance engineers’ SOP-workflows to ensure that all projects are completed in a timely manner and on budget.
• Develop and perform a preventative maintenance and safety inspections to reduce equipment failure or accidents.
• Partner with vendors to best service the needs of the station and troubleshoot issues as needed.
• Facilitate continuing education on emerging technologies with technical and operations staff.
• Keep maintenance logs and databases for problem resolution and identify recurring issues..
• Ascertain and satisfy other departments’ needs for service
• Oversee our mission critical systems, including testing back-up systems, training employees on handling such situations in order to ensure no loss of air time.
• Have expert knowledge regarding equipment, technology, and systems and be able to step in an assist in emergency situations.
• Assist in developing and implementing Capital and Operating budgets.
• Stay current with emerging technologies and industry changes
• Supervise and maintain support systems such as emergency power generation and switching systems, UPS and power distribution devices.
• Document and maintain strict FCC, EAS, and OSHA regulation compliance.
• Must be available to work during breaking news situations, severe weather, new system integrations and updates, and provide on-call services 24-7.
• Display and maintain professional appearance, based on station standards, and professional demeanor.
• Regularly receive and distribute information and instructions via telephone, email, memos and staff meetings, to station personnel or outside vendors/clients.
• Oversee local daily technical operations.
• Develop, communicate, and implement strategic and tactical plans.
• Diligently manage projects driven locally and corporately.
• Facilitate user and system break-fix and troubleshooting as needed.
• Manage purchasing, logistics, and asset tracking for the department.
• Technical champion for production, news, sales, and traffic departments
• Around the clock phone/email access and remote troubleshooting required.
• Other duties as required.
Qualifications/Requirements
• Must be able to act with urgency, immediacy, and efficiency and make situation appropriate decisions.
• Ability to meet deadlines and be resourceful to solve technical issues.
• Able to work with other departments’ needs and schedules to accomplish goals.
• Must be solution-oriented, proactive, and willing to dig to find a sound resolution.
• Must be familiar with information systems infrastructure relating to broadcast technical systems.
• Must have working knowledge of the latest operating systems software, including server and desktop operating systems; Familiar with network routing and IP addressing.
• Bachelor’s degree required (additional 5 years work experience in lieu of degree acceptable).
• Minimum of 5 years of information technology experience.
• Experience managing equipment used for production and broadcasting including but not limited to:
• Video switchers, audio mixers, graphics systems, automation systems, editing systems, video servers, media asset management solutions, archive system, and transcoding systems.
• Strong network engineering skills.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
• Strong background and experience with Microsoft Operating Systems and tools.
• Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office with emphasis in Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Project applications.
• Experience with Spanish a plus.
• Prior military service a plus.
• PMI, PMP Certification a plus.
Desired Characteristics
• Willingness to travel and work overtime, and on weekends with short notice.
• Must be willing to take drug test and submit to a background investigation..
• Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States
• Must be 18 years or older.
• Must be willing to work at the station in Phoenix, AZ.
