Job Description:
The Wall Street Journal seeks a journalist and digital strategist for a junior position on its growing Audience Development team.
The role provides daily research support to the Audience Development and Analytics teams and plays a key role in increasing traffic, audience reach and subscriptions across the global newsroom.
This newsroom role helps deliver critical digital insights and analysis into newsroom key performance indicators and goals. The role provides daily support to the Audience Development and Analytics team with responsibilities including data reporting, analysis, dashboard creation, KPI monitoring, and integration of web traffic data with off-platform data.
The ideal candidate will have 1-2 years experience working with data within a newsroom context and have a proven track record in the implementation of audience development strategies. The candidate should be able to quickly shift and advance our practices in an evolving digital landscape.
The Analyst will:
• Assist in creating a global strategy for developing and evolving the key metrics used to analyze site and social traffic and conversion
• Monitor real time traffic and social data to support editorial efforts
• Create and disseminate SEO and publishing best practices guidance
• Work with the Audience Development Manager to identify growth opportunities across existing and new platforms
• Managing, organize, and present data in a clear, concise and actionable format
• Respond to regular data requests from editors and reporters, and translate data into actionable insights
• Work with audience engagement team to track social analytics
• Assist on major data projects
• Produce daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly newsroom reports relating to outcomes based on the data analysis for various audiences
• Provide quick turnaround responses to ad-hoc data queries
• Identify and resolve issues with the data
Skills and Qualifications
• Basic knowledge of data analytics tools preferred, including Omniture or Google Analytics
• Real-time analytics such as Parse.ly or Chartbeat
• Social analytics including Facebook and Twitter Insights
• Microsoft Office skills (Excel, including Report Builder, charting and analysis of large data sets; PowerPoint; Word, etc.)
• Data visualization skills
• A passion for numbers and ability to find and communicate the narrative around data findings
• Skilled at providing qualitative and quantitative analysis
• Flexible and able to manage multiple assignments in a dynamic environment
• Strong time management skills
• Self-driven, able to work independently and in a team oriented environment
• Basic conceptual understanding of SQL; experience with SQL a plus
Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Editorial/journalism background preferred; social media experience
• 1-2+ years of hands-on experience in related field
