Summary of Internship
The intern for the National Geographic Film and Media Archives will be trained on a variety of responsibilities, providing the student with a broad range of hands-on experience working in an extensive documentary library and archive of film, video, and audio assets. The breadth of tasks will support the day-to-day operations of the Archive, and will include learning how to prepare assets for digital preservation, records management techniques, and collection assessment and survey methodology. Additionally, the intern will develop valuable client-relations skills as they assist with the fulfillment of client requests. The student will also have the opportunity to research and help curate collections in the archive.
Five Principal Learning Responsibilities
1. Methodology for Digital Preservation: The intern will be taught the proper methodology and will implement those methods to prepare assets for digital preservation. (30%)
2. Records Management: The intern will learn the fundamentals of records management, particularly in a Digital Asset Management database. He/she will have hands-on experience searching, creating, and editing records in our Digital Asset Management databases. (30%)
3. Fulfillment of client-directed archival retrieval: The intern will assist with client requests and learn the process for archival retrieval. This responsibility will also help the intern develop and hone valuable client-relation skills. (20%)
4. Collection assesments and survey methodology: The intern will be introduced to the principles of collection assesment and survey and have the opportunity to assist with various collection assesment projects. (10%)
5. Curation: The intern will assist in researching and organizing collections within the film archive in order to highlight their historical or eductional value (10%)
Related Field of Study Required
Archive or Library Management field of study recommended. Knowledge of film or video preferred.
Knowledge and Skills Required
Requires strong attention to detail along with excellent communication, organizational and computer skills. Familiarity with industry library software systems, cataloging standards and media asset management systems is a plus.
Eligibility
Candidate must be enrolled at an accredited College or University at the time of application.
