USA TODAY Sports Media Group is seeking a Lead Platform Developer to join its team.
This position reports to the Director of Product and will be responsible for the development and maintenance of the network’s enterprise WordPress VIP content management system, which currently supports more than 50 web properties.
The Sports Media Group serves content to tens of millions -- and growing -- users a month, with destinations spanning every major sports vertical, including For The Win, MMA Junkie and The Big Lead.
As Lead Platform Developer, you’ll be responsible for writing top-notch code, performing quality review and maintaining a stringent set of standards that will be applied throughout our technical stack.
In this position, you’ll work closely with designers and product managers, and lead a small group of fellow developers on solutions that will shape USA TODAY’s future.

• You have expert-level WordPress skills and experience building large, scalable platforms for publishers.
• You're able to design solutions that are maintainable and easily extended to meet future needs.
• You have strong communication skills and are able to convey your ideas to technical and non-technical individuals alike.
• You love doing things the right way: documentation, automated tests, adhering to code standards, QA testing, etc.
• You're able to effectively manage a team and mentor junior colleagues.
You should:
• Have several years of experience leading a development team.
• Be proficient in PHP, CSS and Javascript -- we’re a WordPress shop after all.
• Have demonstrable experience developing web applications of the highest quality.
• Have used a wide range of APIs.
• Be familiar with general version control principles.
• Have built and maintained WordPress plugins.
• Be intensely detail-oriented and organized.
• Have examples to share of sites and/or apps launched under your supervision.
We’d also like it if you:
• Are skilled in other applicable web frameworks (Django, Drupal, etc).
• Have experience working with industry-standard data platforms like Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics and Comscore.
• Are familiar with project management principles (Agile, Waterfall) and have used issue tracking software (JIRA).
• Have spent time working on WordPress VIP partner sites.
• Have experience developing, implementing and utilizing Continuous Integration scripts.
• Are well versed in current advertising technologies and standards.
