McGraw-Hill Education, School Group is seeking a leader of our comprehensive market research capabilities. This role reports to the Vice President, Strategy & Analytics and is based in Columbus OH. The Director of Market Research works closely with peers on the Strategy & Analytics leadership team including Competitive Intelligence, Analytics, and Pricing to deliver key insights to the business.
The Director of Market Research is responsible for the design, management and execution of a market research strategy and competency across MHSE. This leadership role oversees a team of 7 professionals, including two senior analyst, that cover a wide range of research capabilities including product research, marketing research, efficacy research, user experience and usability testing, pricing research, and customer studies. In addition, this role oversees the synthesis and analysis of high value secondary research sources.
This effective execution of research strategy is critical for strategic decision-making across markets, channels, departments and products. This role ensures that critical data and market insights are effectively employed across MHSE’s Product Development, Marketing, Sales and Academic Design functions, thereby improving fact-based decision-making.
The Director of Market Research interacts regularly with functional leaders to determine and shape organizational goals and respective information needs. This role also collaborates with research resources in McGraw-Hill Education’s Higher Education, International, and Professional divisions to share best practices and drive efficiencies.
Critical Functions:
• Design and refine MHSE’s ongoing market research strategy to improve clarity of insights in the K-12 market.
• Own the implementation of Market Research for the organization, with a focus on ongoing process and quality improvements.
• Lead market research teams to ensure data-driven development of new product solutions and services.
• Manage the research budget including a robust set of quantitative and qualitative research tools and vendor relationships to meet the needs of MHSE while identifying opportunities to improve effectiveness and efficiency of research spend.
• Ensure development and go-to-market strategies and plans accurately reflect all in-market learning.
• Work with the Strategy & Analytics management team to create, analyze, and execute reports and solutions to allow MHSE to make fact-based decisions and strategies.
• Work closely with functional leaders to understand unmet needs in the market, and provide recommendations on important industry trends and competitive activities.
• Work with the VP of Strategy & Analysis to counsel senior management on strategic initiatives, driving development of breakthrough innovation.
A successful candidate will have:
• Bachelor's degree in marketing (with a focus on market research), economics, statistics, or a related field required. Graduate degree highly recommended (MBA preferred).
• A minimum of 7 years of professional work experience, with an emphasis on data, insights, and strategy development database management and integrity as well as data mining.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in leading a team of professionals, with demonstrated ability to create an environment of passion, excellence and creativity for your team.
• Ability to work with, coordinate, and motivate cross-functional teams through managerial courage, a strong commitment to consumers, colleagues, and business partners, a high level of integrity (“EQ”), and open mindedness.
• Demonstrated passion for excellence in forward-looking insights development, specifically where the cross-section of traditional and digital can inform opportunities, and strategic decision making.
• A track record of developing research talent.
• Goal-oriented, resourceful and self-directed, takes personally accountability, and believes strongly in open communication.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and manage multiple projects with tight deadlines in a timely fashion.
• Excellent communications skills, both oral and written.
• Some travel may be required.
A successful candidate may have:
• Experience in the education industry preferred.
• Consulting experience desired.
