Associate or Senior Editor
Nature Materials: Shanghai
Do you love science but feel that a career at the bench isn’t enough to sate your desire to learn more about the natural world? Do you find yourself reading papers outside your chosen area of research? Does the growth of science in China excite you?
If the answer is ‘yes’ to any or all of these questions, you could be the person we’re looking for to join the editorial team of Nature Materials at our offices in Shanghai.
Nature Materials publishes cutting-edge, high-quality research across the entire breadth of materials science. To help us to build on the success of this journal and to explore the exciting opportunities offered by the surge of high impact scientific research in China, we’re seeking a materials scientist who has a critical eye, a deep understanding of their subject and interests beyond, and who can think on their feet.
To be considered for the position, you will have:
• Research experience to PhD level (or equivalent) in materials science or relevant discipline such as physics, chemistry or engineering. We are particularly interested in applicants with research expertise in nanomaterials, interfaces and/or structural materials but we would welcome applications from outstanding candidates in other areas of materials science.
• Postdoctoral research experience is strongly preferred. A thorough understanding of the fundamentals of the subject is essential.
• A passion for science and a thirst to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your speciality.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be fluent in English (written and spoken). Knowledge of Mandarin would be an advantage but is not essential.
• The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline.
• Be eager to travel within China and internationally to engage and liaise with the scientific community through laboratory visits and conferences.
Key tasks:
• Selection of manuscripts for publication in the journal, with the appropriate editorial oversight and within the framework of its editorial policy, following procedures determined by the Chief Editor. Aim for quality and speed of decisions; and the right mix of tact and firmness in letters to authors.
• Make those manuscripts selected for publication accessible to a wide readership, by giving attention to their titles and introductory sections, particularly the first paragraph, and by suggesting to the authors any structural changes that are needed.
• Ensure that manuscripts accepted for publication are transferred to Editorial production in an appropriate, complete state. Work with the Editorial production, Copy editing and Web production teams to ensure the smooth processing of manuscripts and other material, according to production deadlines; conduct final proof checks.
• Recommend appropriate selected manuscripts to the Chief Editor for inclusion in News and Views, and in the journal press release. Write a one-paragraph summary for the press release.
• Suggest to the Chief Editor topics for review-type articles, and commentaries; assess proposals from potential authors; commission, and then edit developmentally the completed manuscripts.
• Commission a number (to be agreed with the Chief Editor) of News and Views articles (linked and/or unlinked) each month and edit the pieces to high standard of readability and accessibility.
• Write a number (to be agreed with the Chief Editor) of Research Highlights each month, for the journal, based on papers published in the wider literature.
• Be responsible to the Chief Editor, as required, for various agreed sections of the journal. This will usually involve commissioning, editing and writing articles, and involvement in the presentation of these sections.
• Suggest to the Chief Editor appropriate topics for Editorials, and be prepared to write the piece if asked.
• Attend conferences and meetings and visit research institutions (in agreement with the Chief Editor). Such activities will prompt a brief written report that will be circulated to the editorial team of the journal and also to editors of related journals, if deemed appropriate by the Chief Editor. The focus will be on visits to research institutions in China to encourage high quality submissions to Nature Materials, but travel to international meetings outside of China is also encouraged.
• Advise Advertising, Marketing, Sponsorship and Site Licence departments as required, answering questions raised and offering suggestions/leads wherever possible.
• Devise and supply editorial content for special projects, such as supplements, as agreed with the Chief Editor.
• Assist in covering the editorial responsibilities of colleagues in their absence.
• Such other tasks as the company may assign from time to time.
Key relationships:
• Work with other members of the editorial, publishing, production, web production, copy editing and administrative staff to ensure the smooth running of the journal.
• Advise Advertising, Marketing, Sponsorship and Site Licence departments as required.
• Work with the Executive Editor, NRG, Greater China, to develop a better understanding of the Chinese research community, including emerging areas of research, author pain points, opportunities for new journals and project, and contribute to formulation and delivery of the overall editorial strategy in China.
• Work with other editorial colleagues in Greater China to share intelligences and other leads than might be useful to the editorial activities of other Nature journals.
• Establish, enhance and confirm the reputation of the journal and Nature Publishing Group in the scientific community by fostering good relationships with individual researchers (while respecting confidentiality on editorial and commercial matters).
The successful candidate will report to the Chief Editor of the journal and play an important role in determining the representation of their subject in the journal. They will handle original research papers submitted from all over the world, and work closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review. The ability to recommend well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice is crucial. They will liaise extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature family — including Nature, Nature Physics, Nature Photonics, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Chemistry and Nature Energy — and leading experts in the international scientific community. They will also be ambassadors for Nature Research throughout China, and be involved in substantial outreach activities, including lab visits and seminars. They must therefore be dynamic and outgoing and have excellent interpersonal skills. Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for Senior Editor positions.
The role is offered on a full-time, permanent basis in our Shanghai office following an expected 3 month training period in the London office. Any offer of employment will be contingent on the necessary work permits for the UK and China, as applicable, being granted (the Company will provide reasonable assistance with the necessary application process in this respect).
Applications should include the following:
1. A cover letter telling us who you are and why you want to leave bench-research to become a full-time Nature journal editor.
2. A CV detailing your education, relevant employment history, list of published scientific papers, and any other achievements that you feel demonstrates your suitability for the position.
