The Associated Press seeks a temporary Newsperson/Legislative Relief Reporter for a 17-week assignment in its Nashville, Tenn., bureau.
Reporting to the Tennessee-Kentucky news editor, the reporter will contribute to covering breaking news and enterprise stories in Tennessee. Travel to assignments in Tennessee is likely and travel to assignments in other states is possible.
Qualifications:
Successful candidates should have demonstrated sound news judgment and the skills to aggressively pursue breaking news, develop a beat, identify and write compelling enterprise stories and work in multiple formats to serve state, national and global audiences.
Candidates should have at least five years of experience in newsgathering for a daily news operation. The successful candidate must write accurately and quickly on deadline and in breaking news situations. Proficiency on social media for both reporting and promotion of work is expected. He or she will have strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, including the ability to successfully juggle multiple priorities. The ideal candidate must be a self-starter, possess a high degree of self-motivation and the ability to communicate well with all levels of staff and management. The candidate must be able to work all shifts, including overnights and weekends.
Experience with computer-assisted reporting, freedom of information and open-records laws, video production and investigative reporting techniques are a plus. Fluency in Spanish or another foreign language is a plus.
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required.
