Scientific American seeks an experienced journalist to help lead its award-winning news team, responsible for daily coverage of the most important and awe-inspiring advances in science and technology. The Assistant News Editor is a key member of our editorial team, responsible for supporting the News Editor in all aspects of the news process, including oversight of staff and freelance assignments, article editing, coordination of partner content, leading news meetings, planning the monthly Advances section of the print edition, development of special projects and general administration. Additionally, the Assistant News Editor works closely with the features, opinion and multimedia and engagement editors to ensure that Scientific American’s overall content and engagement strategy is effective and efficient.
Requirements:
• College degree
• Minimum 3 years of experience as a news report or editor
• In-depth knowledge of science and a grasp of current events in STEM
• Excellent communication, reporting, writing and editing skills
• Command and comfort with journalistic values, best practices and standards
• Familiarity with advanced reporting techniques such as investigations, data journalism and multimedia
• Demonstrated skill in working with teams, especially in digital media
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to multi-task and work on deadline
• Command and comfort with social media best practices and standards
• Familiarity and comfort with online media analytics
