The Director of Data Operations oversees the legislative research and analysis arm of CQ Roll Call. As the team’s leader, you will direct editors, researchers and others responsible for the timely and accurate production, publication and maintenance of various CQ.com databases, external data feeds and other content to provide the CQ Roll Call Group with superior congressional data.
The job requires a strong attention to detail, thoroughness and a complete understanding of Congress and the legislative process. In this role, you will be responsible for the overall integrity of the online legislative tracking product(s), and often will work quite independently to maintain your own product(s) and to coordinate each day’s product coverage.
Accountabilities:
In this role you would be expected to:
• Lead a diverse team that is responsible for reporting, researching and analyzing congressional action
• Make certain the team accurately collects, processes, codes and publishes legislative data, documents, amendments, schedules, transcripts and/or bill information
• Politely respond to and act upon client questions or requests for information, documents, transcripts or other data in a timely manner
• Develop a thorough understanding of operational tools, procedures and troubleshooting
• Maintain excellent and long-standing relationships with vendors and ensure timely delivery of vendor content, including following up on corrections and updates
• Direct team members and other colleagues in the day-to-day coverage and execution of the above actions
• Work with team members and colleagues on building their professional skills
• Cultivate relationships with congressional sources and government agencies for informational, journalistic and document source purposes and help colleagues do the same
• Work with the team to coordinate product(s) coverage and/or product improvements
• Alert the executive editor if a situation arises where CQ might have a gap in coverage
• Provide regular feedback for the team, including performance evaluations of team researchers and candidate recruitment and interviews
• Contribute to the company’s overall information-gathering efforts, including:
◦ Setting product(s) and team priorities
◦ Independent day-to-day oversight of online CQ database products
◦ Contributing concepts ideas about how to improve operations and CQ products
◦ Addressing personnel issues when appropriate
◦ Providing subscribers with complete, timely coverage of error-free, quality legislative information within set deadlines and consistent with CQ style
◦ A complete understanding of the CQ databases and the procedures for updating that content
◦ Excellent knowledge of legislative tracking products and procedures
◦ Managing to balance long hours and a capricious congressional schedule while juggling multiple assignments
◦ Serving as the liaison between the newsroom and the product team to make sure critical issues are prioritized and on the roadmap
◦ Demonstrating solid news judgment and a deep interesting in Washington DC
◦ Excellent problem-solving skills, particularly in regard to obtaining new or replacement data
◦ Successful instances of leadership and mentoring as well as building collegial relationships
Experience, skills and professional attributes:
To succeed in this role you must have:
• At least 5 years of experience with the federal government, politics, legislative policy or Capitol Hill
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in media or information services
• Experience with independently maintaining many aspects of the products within her or his purview
• Top-notch researching skills, plus a strong attention to detail and excellent organizational abilities
To succeed in this role you must demonstrate:
• Ability to manage and work on multiple projects while balancing deadline speed
• Excellent knowledge of Congress and the legislative process and a deep understanding of congressional operations, procedure and policymaking
• Ability to develop sources and gather information in a sophisticated way
• An understanding of the company’s mission and serving the stakeholder audience
• Willingness to work at any point when Congress is in session
