Responsibilities
Position Overview
The Senior Vice President, Acquisitions & Production will be responsible for identifying and delivering new content for the UPHE Content Group in the US and Canada. This will be an exciting and unique senior leadership role that will lead and grow the US and Canada Acquisitions team and work closely with the Executive Vice President, UPHE Content Group to execute the 5 year business plan. It will also provide a central point between the creative, commercial, and corporate worlds. The role is two-fold, being responsible for setting the strategic plans to drive growth, as well as managing a team from content acquisitions, distribution strategy, and marketing.
Responsibilities
Acquisitions & Production
• Plan and deliver an annual acquisitions/production strategy for the US & Canada
• Proactively source and acquire programming across all genres for all platforms and identify new content and distribution opportunities globally
• Support specific International A&R activity and help deliver growth to the Company both in the US & Canada, as well as Internationally
• Nurture existing talent and licensors as well as bring in new licensors to work with Universal
• Spot the next hit before anyone else does and champion it within Universal
• Set own acquisition and production deadlines and achieve them; work with key stakeholders, both externally (e.g. Producers, Distributors, etc.) and across the Group (e.g. Marketing, Operations) to produce and distribute new content to agreed release schedules and deadlines
• Manage all areas of the job, from program production and new content pitches to contracts and budget planning
• Gather feedback and proactively resolve issues on activities and titles
• Network at a high level and have an extensive set of contacts
• Attend markets, industry events, and screenings as appropriate
General Management
• Work on key Long Range Plan (LRP) projects and initiatives as directed by the EVP
• Lead and manage Content Strategy & Marketing teams to drive day-to-day transactional activities as well as long term strategic initiatives
• Assume a key leadership role and be seen as the “go to” and responsible person for liaison with all control functions including Finance, HR, and Legal in the US & Canada
• Participate as a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT) in business strategy and other leadership initiatives
• Provide support, advice, and guidance to the SMT as required
• Maintain strong working relationships with the EVP, UPHE Content Group and the North American Operating Company, identifying and exploring synergies and growth opportunities
• Develop plan for new business strategy and growth ideas
Qualifications/Requirements
• 12+ years of experience within the entertainment media industry, specifically within content development, content acquisition and co-productions within either the film or television industries.
• Successful experience forecasting and managing a P&L with strong commercial acumen.
• A skilled negotiator who can both set up and close deals and the ability to interpret and compile contracts.
Desired Characteristics
• Previous experience in a talent facing role. Able to support and work alongside artists/licensors in all content genres, from TV and children’s programs through to specific territory talent.
• Excellent influencing skills, able to confidently liaise with and secure support from senior stakeholders external and internal
• Consumer-centric and understands motivations, identifies and utilizes market trends to influence strategic planning
• Knowledgeable and experienced in multi-platform distribution of content
• Ability to work independently as an ‘in-house indie’ within a ‘big studio’ environment
• Strong interpersonal skills, able to work across functions and business groups and at all levels of the organization
• Demonstrated innovation with a track record of delivering successfully
• First rate project management skills – able to prioritize, set a critical path, and manage complex stakeholder networks across a large number of projects within challenging deadlines
• Strong people management skills – successfully build and manage a team of at least 5 reports
• Confident and credible presenter - able to present to large and diverse groups
• Able to work to deadlines in a highly pressured and demanding environment
