Overview and Responsibilities
Negotiate favorable rates and secure rights for material (music & other media) included in digital and event programming/projects produced by Viacom groups.
Work closely and communicate regularly with production, production management, and within the business and legal affairs department. Record and track rights information in order to easily identify available content for Viacom content distribution deals.
Responsibilities
• Facilitate clearance requests by researching copyright ownership and preparing written requests to copyright owners, and by researching rights to pre-existing Viacom material. As required, work on site at Events.
• Regularly report clearance costs to Production and Production Management weekly. Work closely with these departments and proactively suggest cost-saving options and alternatives.
• Must be familiar with technology including Online, Wireless, UGC, Virtual Reality, Apps, Gaming etc. and the rights and licensing nuances associated with these platforms.
• Draft and revise agreements to conform to negotiated terms.
• Analyze and vet episodes/clips/podcasts/vlogs for third party clearance issues in order to exploit on several media platforms. Determine cleared clips/material including analyzing scripts, music cue sheets, interpreting synchronization, master use, footage and photo licenses.
• Assist department management with special projects outside of the assigned area. May function as project leader on special assignments.
• Build and foster good working relationships with client groups and within the licensing community.
• Maintain contract files for all assigned programs/ projects and track relevant rights and restriction information. Input rights information into the rights databases.
• Secure, review and approve guest releases, music cue sheets, and show logs (if required) from in-house producers and/or third party productions. Collect deliverables, including guest/location agreements, license agreements and talent agreements when applicable. Report discrepancies or missing information to Producers and follow up to insure proper completion.
• Communicate information regarding Music Strat deals and other blanket deals to clients as necessary, under supervision of VP.
• Ensure that licenses are executed and paid in a timely manner.
• Lead and Participate in workshops for client groups.
Basic Qualifications
• BA in Television, Film, Communications, Publishing, Business or similar
• Understanding of and curiosity in new and emerging Technologies
• Experience negotiating
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and PowerPoint
Additional Qualifications
• 1-3 years’ experience in television/music/entertainment field, preferably in a business affairs, rights & clearances, or licensing capacity
• Ability to accurately analyze contract and license agreements
• Ability to make effective presentations on complex topics to client groups and employees
• Ability to effectively negotiate deals with licensors via phone and in-person.
• Work well under pressure and navigate grey areas
