Executive Director, TV Programming & Strategy
Sony Pictures Television’s Distribution team is looking for an Executive Director, TV Programming & Strategy to support efforts in estimating and maximizing international television revenue from Feature content sales across the various TV windows. The role requires exceptionally strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and the ability to build trusting relationships among multiple business sectors including feature product owner groups, finance, legal, business affairs, operations, sales and executive management. Because of the complexity of the business and the speed for which it is changing, it is preferable that this individual have a solid understanding of content licensing.
The Executive Director, TV Programming & Strategy position is broad in scope, touching on many aspects of a multi-billion dollar television distribution business. It requires the ability to quickly maneuver through and analyze relevant sales and market data to assess and communicate meaningful insights towards valuing feature content and supporting related product information and decision-making needs across multiple stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
SLOT MANAGEMENT
Maximize feature revenue through proactive management of slots and feature pipeline.
• Work with regional sales and planning teams to review output deals (using relevant tracking sheets/detail) for current and future deal years to ensure feature slots are filled according to the deals. Work with SPWAG to acquire content.
• Work closely with feature product owners (e.g. SPWAG and SPC) and rights management teams to manage the volume of current and future features needs in the various territories/regions (many with different requirements).
• Interact with theatrical divisions (US and International) and sales teams on theatrical releases to maximize TV revenue while minimizing release costs (“Uplift” analyses). This includes forward looking analyses of available territory slots requiring a qualifying theatrical release (e.g. UK pay TV), understanding current market trends, and informing decisions with SPRI and sales as to local releases.
GREENLIGHTS, ULTIMATES & FILM MODEL
Using knowledge of deals and markets, project and provide feature estimates for greenlight and ultimate values.
• Understand and track qualifiers and rate cards for output/volume deals, and be the centralized subject matter expert/resource for queries on the same.
• Provide estimates and greenlight requests daily/ad-hoc
◦ For specific film / territory estimate requests, consider slots, genre, and market value.
◦ For greenlights, consider (theatrical and TV value) past comps and changes in deal/market values
• Provide Ultimates annually (approximately 200 films) with a quarterly update of specific films (averaging 20). Process includes
◦ Gathering local theatrical performance/estimates and calculating fees for territories/deals that are based on local theatrical performance.
◦ Determining fees based on qualifiers, term years, subscriber counts for pay tv, different pricing tiers for output deals.
◦ Calculate package or volume deal values based on first run and rerun fees
◦ Evaluate data in RPM for sales to date by territory, by media, by feature to determine and consider Unsold To Go against established ultimates
• Update Film Model annually
◦ Consider fees for current output deals and project outlook
◦ Evaluate history of pricing, reruns
◦ Discuss and consider future market/deal trends with Sales
◦ Work with Finance to develop model assumptions, run titles through model and analyze/validate variances
◦ Create a presentation summary of model for review and communication with Senior Executives
AD-HOC PROJECTS/FEATURE DISTRIBUTION SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT
• On a regular basis, respond to SPE Senior management (e.g. Product Owners, Business Affairs) fielding questions and providing guidance on deals, feature demand, split rights, qualifiers, run times dubbing, etc.
• Interact with outside producers to negotiate and answer questions regarding our deals in relationship to split rights. Coordinate windows of split rights between our sales offices and outside producers.
SPECIAL REPORTS
Utilizing in-depth knowledge of our deals and business, provide specialized ad-hoc reports (e.g. to sales, product owners)
Requirements:
• 7+ years in the entertainment field (preferably TV media with a passion for and knowledge of feature films)
• 5+ years working with international markets
• Excellent financial modeling and presentation skills
• Exceptional communicator across multiple audiences
• Critical thinker with superior business acumen and analytical skills
• Proactive in identifying risks and driving opportunities
• Comfortable interpreting complex deal terms and applying and driving relevant action
• Bachelor’s degree
• MBA a plus
• International experience a plus
