Responsibilities
You are first and foremost a storyteller. You have the skills, tools and journalistic chops to change our report. You deepen, transform, create, and build digital experiences that compel audiences and drive them further into stories. You’re a leader, and not in an abstract way because right out of the gate we need you to evaluate, recruit and foster visual journalists. In fact, building and leading a team is as exciting to you as practicing your craft.
As the lead of this newly formed team, you will build the foundation of our visual language and define how we tell stories beyond text, videos and photos. Data visualization, graphics and animation must become crucial elements of our digital storytelling and you are going to take us there.
What you’ll do
Use graphics and visual storytelling to enrich our report and grow a loyal audience
Set the tone and define NBC News’ visual language
Change the meaning of the phrase ‘the best way to tell the story’
Manage, teach and recruit a team of rock star visual journalists
Establish a rhythm and repeatable processes/work flows for producing (info)graphics and visual stories for both quick-turn breaking news and longer-lead feature journalism
Partner with Technology to ensure we have the right and best tools
Who you are

Visual journalism is your main focus, but you can write a clear and persuasive email and you can make a good point out loud
You have big thoughts and the courage to voice them
You have a great sense of humor or you know one when you see it
Qualifications/Requirements
What we need
You’ve worked as a journalist and/or data scientist
You can prove your ability to recruit and teach a team to do all of the above
You have experience in leading a team to deliver creative content
At least 8 years of your working life have been in a newsroom, media company, or digital production studio, or the like.
You have a bachelor’s degree ideally in design or journalism
Demonstrated experience in visual journalism
