Job summary:
• The Level Design Director manages content, mainly from Level Designers, Story Designers and Level Scripters.
• Just like in the movie business, the Level Design Director is a director on all levels of a game and must control what will happen with gameplay elements; to impose rhythm, tension, gameplay intentions, difficulties, etc.
• His goal is to constantly try to improve the gameplay/flow in all levels.
Responsibilities:
The main and usual functions of this position are to:
• Be the central point on “how” the story and the gameplay loops are brought together to make the “gameplay experience”, in line with the vision of the Creative Director;
• Participate to creating the “blueprint” during the conception phase;
• Collaborate and advise on the development of gameplay elements in order to ensure they are well-used during the experience;
• Put in place content management methods, documents on gameplay intention (for all game and maps), macro-structure, level design documentation, document on the direction of the game, etc. to achieve the gameplay experience and communicate directives to other production trades;
• Participate to the development of the workflow on work organisation and priority management to prove, by iterations, concrete results of “gameplay experience”;
• Establish, with game design, the game exposure to ease and optimize the learning curve of the player;
• Be present to playtests during debug phases to develop a plan of action about corrections required to the game, based on feedback from the players;
• Ensure chronological coherence between levels;
• Perform any other related tasks.
Qualifications
Education:
ACS in level design and direction of video games or any other equivalent educational background.
Relevant experience:
Minimum of 5-year experience as Level Designer or any other relevant experience.
Other skills:
• Ability to efficiently communicate directives.
• Ability to review other people’s work and suggest improvements, if necessary.
• Ability to formulate ideas; to communicate with art direction and make constructive criticism.
• Knowing how to work with graphic team members and other team members of the project.
