The Associated Press is seeking a Video Technology Specialist for our New York City headquarters.
The technology specialist is responsible for editorial and GMS client support of the NYC bureau’s broadcast production and video technology systems. Provide level 3 support for non-linear video/audio editing applications, digital editing, hybrid video systems and studios. The positon will be required to plan and implement assigned projects on time and on budget. The position is part of a global team that is responsible for the support of the complex systems installed at NYC which integrate with other global production environments.
Technical Environment
AP’s NYC multimedia production center is a state-of-the-art facility utilizing the latest technology in non-linear video and audio editing systems, radio network automation, SAN storage, and multiple video and audio production studios. These facilities operate 24 x 7 x 365 days a year to support live video and radio programming, on-air and online video production and news gathering efforts. Journalists in the field shoot on solid state cameras, edit using non-linear editing systems, and use remote access to transmit news video and audio packages from the field worldwide into key production centers. NYC also operates production studios for internal and external customer.
Duties:
• Provide level 3 support for broadcast systems
• Install, test, document and support specialized systems for video production, audio production, live broadcast and interactive media
• Oversee the design and implementation of custom audio-visual circuits
• Research new broadcast technologies and make recommendations to improve news gathering and broadcast production
• Provide support for convergent broadcast & IT technologies
• Provide comprehensive documentation for new broadcast technologies
• Detail all work carried out using a centralized ticketing system
• Coach and train staff in support of broadcast technologies
• Travel is required, sometimes on short notice
• Be on call via a company cell phone
• Work on holidays and special events when required
Qualifications:
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in broadcast environment
• Fluent in English
• Valid driver’s license
• Microsoft Server certification (e.g. MCSA), Apple Desktop certification (e.g. ACSP), CVE Certified Video Engineer, Broadcast Technology certification – HNC, CBNT, or equivalent, Customer service certification preferred
• Additional spoken languages a plus
• Capable of working under minimal supervision
• Capable of working in a global team

Knowledge:
• Complete understanding of non-linear server technology and SD/HD video production systems
• Good understanding of hybrid video and IP (smpte 2022) technologies
• Familiar with satellite engineering principals including MPEG encoding and transport systems including satellite RF and distribution technologies
• Understanding serial digital video systems
• Understanding of camera & lens technologies
• Detailed understanding of video and audio measurements and quality assessment
• Comprehensive industry knowledge of digital and IP video distribution
• Knowledge of audio and video system design and troubleshooting
• Experience with SMPTE standards
• Understanding of the principles of Customer Service
• Familiar with TCP/IP networks
• Familiar with video storage technology
• Proven experience of Mac platform and OS
• Working knowledge of physical networking (wiring & electrical etc).
• Understanding of editorial and newsroom operations
