Description
Director of Product Development responsible for developing innovative, exclusive, on brand products resulting in commercial success and profitable financial growth.
Position Summary:
• Ownership of Product Development for select categories and channels of business at 1800flowers.com.
• Partner with cross-functional teams to position the brand for success by directing the creation of an assortment that is on trend, innovative and commercially viable
• Support the development of products and product sub-categories to achieve elevated sales revenue and meet brand gross margin targets. Accountable for initial pricing and target COGS required to meet gross margin goals across select product categories and channels.
• Drive adherence to the established Timeline meeting all deliverables on time to secure proper deliverables
• Analyze market and industry trends to determine opportunities and expansion areas in the development and commercialization of product across select categories.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Develop and train a select portion of the product development team in the implementation of a new functional structure and expanded roles and responsibilities to meet the expectations of seasonal and core product launches annually.
• Develop a sophisticated level of understanding the sourcing of products and product add-ons domestically and overseas while researching the competitive climate and the competitive arena in the gifting space.
• Direct the creation of consumer-focused product lines through hindsight and assortment plans within categories and across categories avoiding internal duplication.
• Leverage customer knowledge, product knowledge, trends, sourcing and product development expertise to determine customer behavior patterns and product hypotheses to drive strategic brand and enterprise growth.
• Drive key opportunities for growth as well as market assessment for all new product launches.
• Collaborate with cross-functional and enterprise business teams to align on growth opportunities, operational effectiveness and purchasing efficiencies for the enterprise.
• Lead the improvement of processes and cross-functional coordination in the product development and commercialization process.
• Commercialize products with cross functional partners while adhering to all standardized product development timelines.
• Partner with merchandising team on key marketing and promotional opportunities, product quality and execution.
• Partner with Marketing, Merchandising and Creative leadership to craft and communicate the product line and develop inspiration, talking points, product stories and opportunities to enhance the product segments through marketing and merchandising channels
• Lead the development of all packaging concepts for new products, consumer education on product uniqueness and care instructions for all products for launch.
• Collaborate with Customer Knowledge to drive customer research, surveys and focus groups on new products
• Leverage Design Council process, an internal floral design process that leverages industry talent for new product development.
• Research emerging graphic design resources for development of product and packaging. Manage creative execution, photography and copy with creative services.
• Travel domestically and possibly internationally.
Requirements
• Successful track record of 8-10 years leading the development of new, innovative, branded core and seasonal products.
• History of driving innovation and challenging convention.
• Highly creative with a strong sense of brand awareness and a deep understanding and passion for the consumer's needs.
• Recognized as a visionary, one who can communicate his/her perspective successfully as well as inspire new thinking and breakthrough ideas.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills; strong team management and development skills, strong presentation skills.
• Thrives in a fast-paced, results-driven, entrepreneurial environment.
• Combination of visionary creativity and strong analytical business skills. A proven track record in profitably building specialty retail in a fast-paced multi-channel environment a must.
• Demonstrates high taste level in product development and merchandising for an affluent consumer base ($75K+ average income) a must. In tune with consumer, style, design trends.
• Experience in e-commerce and catalog merchandising development a plus.
• Bachelor's degree required
