The Role:
BuzzFeed, the social news and entertainment company, is looking for a Head of Business Development. As the Head of Business Development, you will take the lead on strategic analysis of our business for the purposes of identifying new opportunities for our growing business. In execution of that strategy, you will partner with our finance and legal teams to negotiate corporate deals from partnerships to new business lines. You will lead a team to successfully work cross-functionally to support the growth of BuzzFeed. The ideal candidate will be a proven strategist and dealmaker who has a demonstrated ability to evaluate and execute big partnerships, has an understanding of BuzzFeed's unique position in the marketplace, experience in the media landscape and a solid understanding of the digital content ecosystem.
The Team:
This position is based in NY and reports into the Chief Revenue Officer.
You Will Manage Partnerships and Business Development:
• PLATFORM PARTNERSHIPS
◦ Build, lead and manage the team to be BuzzFeed’s resident experts on Platform Partnerships (Facebook/Twitter/Google’s/YouTube’s and Amazon’s/Twitch’s), particularly how BuzzFeed’s capabilities in content creation, marketing, and advertising fit into their business strategies
◦ Develop incremental ad sales and distribution opportunities with our Platform partners and sales teams
◦ Surface higher-level strategic opportunities for BuzzFeed (both centrally and for individual business units) with these platforms
◦ Develop competitive intelligence on how other media companies are using these platforms and leverage that knowledge to improve BuzzFeed’s business and growth
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
◦ Build, lead and manage the team to partner with BuzzFeed’s Business Unit leaders (Editor-in-Chief, Head of Studio, Head of Media Brands, Head of BuzzFeed Originals) and their leadership teams to develop revenue strategies. Identify and go after new revenue opportunities to meet and exceed revenue targets while staying true to BuzzFeed’s editorial mission
◦ Work with BuzzFeed’s FP&A group to develop and maintain up-to-date revenue and cost models for BuzzFeed Business Units and to model new business opportunities
◦ Negotiate and own implementation of all non-sales partnerships specific to BuzzFeed Business Units, including innovative content deals, editorial partnerships, vendor deals, and other strategic arrangements
◦ Develop, together with other relevant stakeholders and partners, go-to-market strategies, distribution, and packaging for ongoing deals
◦ Develop and extend other strategic relationships for BuzzFeed Business Units
◦ Act as the overall business resource for BuzzFeed Business Units creators and staff
You Have:
• US media / tech industries, advertising and deal experience
• Demonstrated strategic planning and proactive deal making experience and relationships
• Strong communication and collaboration skills across functions and levels
• Outstanding strategic thinker who can also be an operator
• Expert at building and maintaining strong relationships with senior level executives
• Passion for and a familiarity and fluency with media and entertainment, news, and technology
• Strong leadership capabilities with ability to make quick, yet informed strategic decisions related to partnership and deal opportunities
