Position Overview:
The Data Science team at Hotwire is a strategic group responsible for identifying and driving significant revenue growth across all products. This team and position offer an unparalleled opportunity to get exposure to multiple areas of the business and have significant impact. We are responsible for sorting, pricing and email marketing for different Hotwire products such as Hotel and Car.
We work closely with other teams – marketing, product development, finance, business intelligence, and customer operations – with the express goal of using machine learning and advanced analytics to inform decision making and drive performance.
As a Director of Data Science, you will be responsible for managing and growing a team responsible for maximizing Hotwire’s long-term profitability through innovation and applied research.
Responsibilities:
• Mentor the team and help them grow their expertise
• Own pricing and sort from end-to-end, including all aspects of exploratory data analytics, algorithm design, test design and execution
• Help the team develop consumer and pricing insights from sophisticated data-driven analysis that result in specific action plans
• Facilitate deployment, testing, and monitoring of pricing and sorting models
• Work closely with Product Managers and Engineers to design and execute site-wide monetization initiatives
• Provide management with market and/or trend information, needed to make strategic decisions
• Lead the development and evolution of analytical models establishing objectives, key metrics, and test plans
• Manage cross-functional ad hoc research requests
Qualifications:
• Master’s degree with 5 years of experience in a quantitative discipline (Computer Science, Machine Learning, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Statistics)
• Good people management skills with at least 3 years of experience, and strong communication skills, both written and oral.
• Prior experience in e-commerce, with focus on supply/demand dynamics, price elasticity, customer’s behavior, and competitive strategiesis a plus
• Prior analytics and data mining experience, with focus on segmentation strategies and predictive models
• Strong business sense and logical skills to balance data-driven decisions with intuition
• Ability to access, analyze, and draw insight from multi-terabyte data-sets
• Experience in statistical modeling (response models and predictive models a plus)
• Desire and capacity to learn, develop, and lead
• Ability to work independently, self starter who is results oriented
• Ability to understand complex systems
• Intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn new things, techniques and technologies.
• Real world experience of ecommerce companies operating at internet scale.
• Experience using business intelligence and statistical analysis tools
• Programming experience and experience of distributed computing, a plus
