The Engagement Design Group (EDG) is a team of customer obsessed and highly curious designers, researchers, inventors and technologists working collaboratively to bring new innovative products and services that make amazon the most engaging and rewarding experience for our customers.
We are seeking an experienced Design Director to lead an exceptional team that is working to transform the amazon customer experience from an all-purpose megastore to an engaging, personalized experience that connects people with people, communities, and brands that share common interests. We believe that engaging Amazon’s community of contributors, enthusiasts, influencers and brands in ongoing conversations enriches every customer interaction and improves the shopping experience. As a Design Director and senior leader in EDG, you will be responsible for managing a multi-discipline team to create and ship elegant and intuitive experiences that engage and delight customers. Your leadership will inspire, empower, and guide the team to create innovative designs including the end-to-end experience across platforms and devices that enables customers to interact and engage in all that Amazon offers. Specifically, your guidance will inform and shape the information architecture, user experience, interaction and visual design patterns for a variety of products and services and influence the work of designers and engineers across the company. You will inspire the team to think big and explore new ideas, invent and simplify to turn design concepts into globally scalable solutions, insist on the highest standards for interaction and visual design patterns, hire and develop the best talent in the industry, and build trusted partnerships with a variety of product and engineering teams. You will work to identify, define, and teach best practices within the organization and the broader design community to unify design processes, foster innovation and improve efficiency throughout the product development lifecycle.
Basic qualifications:
• 15+ years of experience as a user experience designer, interaction designer, product designer or similar role designing mobile, web, and/or other on-device applications
• 10+ years of experience successfully leading and managing large design teams
• An online portfolio of work demonstrating experience creating great user-centered design solutions across desktop and mobile devices
• Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills
• Proven experience with rapid, iterative design and development processes
• Proven track record presenting to and influencing people, from other designers to senior executive management
• Experience leading projects in a collaborative multi-disciplinary team including designers, web developers, writers, product managers and software developers
• Fluency in best practices for multi-platform information architecture and design, as well as strong knowledge of usability principles and techniques
• Expert skill level with standard design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator,
• Bachelor’s, or equivalent degree, in Design, HCI, or related field or equivalent professional experience within the design field
Preferred qualifications:
• Possess strong resource and planning skills including the ability to staff and manage design team against high-level roadmaps, projects, and priorities
• Strong bias for action including the ability to juggle multiple priorities and effectively deliver in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
• Possess excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and analytical skills
• Be willing to roll up the sleeves to meet business and product deliverables
• Passion for the role of design within an organization and the ability to hire, develop and mentor design talent
• Demonstrated history of acquiring user data (e.g., conducting usability studies, user interviews, contextual inquiry) is a strong plus
• Masters or advanced degree or equivalent professional experience
