About the Role:
The Director of Audio and Technology (A+T) will be part of Audible’s vision for original content production and pilot/prototype-driven approach to testing and learning in a rapidly growing and fast-moving environment. The Director of Audio and Technology will provide strong vision and direction for the sound of Audible Original’s content, and will be responsible for the quality and consistency of programs in the portfolio. He/she will help develop projects, as assigned, help shape production standards and best practices, mentor host talent, and be “hands-on” with the projects they develop and manage.
This job will be based out of Audible’s Jersey City offices until the new building is completed in our Newark, New Jersey headquarters.
About You:
The Director of A+T will be an expert in all areas of sound and music, including audio direction, mixing, sound effects, voice over production, music recording and field production. He/she has experience managing audio technical teams, and values a close and collaborative relationship with production colleagues.
The Director of A+T will have a love for great audio and storytelling, want to push boundaries and discover new things, as well as possess a deep understanding of why great audio programs work and how to foster greatness in their projects.
Key Responsibilities:
The Director of A+T is the technical lead for the Original Content team, setting the technical standards for the full portfolio of Originals productions, and providing support to ensure those standards are met. The Senior Manager participates in editorial and production planning, reviews content, quality, and production, and raises the bar for training, innovation and performance in all aspects of production. He/she will manage studio infrastructure, maintenance, and upgrades, defining the needs for originals studio gear and equipment, be the point of contact regarding technical issues with other teams, and coordinate audio quality, deliverables, and workflow.
Working with the Senior Director for Original Content, and the entire Original Content team, the Senior Manager of A+T will oversee and coordinate the day-to-day technical support for a wide portfolio of audio programs, develop and build a an external audio team, and provide a strong vision and direction for the sound of the Original Content portfolio.
The Director of A+T is a creative force, frequently working to select the music for a series, to oversee the scoring, sound design, to help transform the sound of current projects. He/she must be expert in the final stages of the production process – the mix, mastering, delivery, media management phases – will be the lead on many projects, and will oversee the execution of this phase for the Originals team to assure the highest standards.
Participates in editorial planning of programs of his/her own projects. Reviews content, quality and production of program segments.
Drive the creative conception and development of original programming from ideation to piloting to program production.
Cultivate relationships with prospective talent and partners.
Establishes and enforces clean and effective standard operating procedures and holds staff accountable to those procedures.
Leverage data/analytics/user testing to inform decisions.
Coordinate aspects of post-production program distribution.
Work closely with other members of the Audible Original Content Development team to remain up-to-date on all technical and content changes and modifications
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• 7+ years’ experience in audio production.
• 7+ years of music recording and mixing experience
• Proven ability to lead and grow a team
• Extensive experience in studio set up and field recording gear
• Demonstrated digital editing ability.
• A knowledge and/or understanding of digital listening trends.
• Familiarity with a wide range of subject areas such as news, history, literature, business, comedy, science, entertainment, and arts.
• Understanding of journalism ethics.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
