Job Description
KEY FOCUS
The Portfolio & Cash Services team (“PCS”) works within the Fund Administration group of John Hancock Investments. PCS supports fund events, monitors cash management activities, oversees closed-end fund compliance, and provides various investment enhancement services. These services include securities lending performance monitoring, collateral management, derivative exposure analysis, foreign account documentation, commission recapture, complex security approvals, and ad hoc research supporting senior management requests.
The Portfolio & Cash Services Analyst will operate in a team environment and be responsible for completion of daily deliverables as well as assisting PCS management on a variety of projects. Under the supervision of a Director, the Analyst will measure the execution and outcome of each investment enhancement service. The Analyst will also regularly interface with other John Hancock Investments colleagues, senior management, and external service providers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Prepare daily exception reports and participate in oversight of the Funds’ service providers (including sub-advisers, custodian banks, line of credit providers, securities lending agents, transfer agents, and the state registration vendor)
• Monitor operations of programs such as the line of credit facility on leveraged closed end funds, interfund lending, state registration process, broker commission recapture program, and closed end fund shelf offerings/buybacks
• Complete analyses related to derivatives exposure, sub-adviser cash management, securities lending, and other operational items
• Ensure all policies and procedures are followed and daily trading/wire deadlines are met.
• Prepare quarterly Board of Trustees materials, other routine reports, and ad-hoc reports for senior management such as Funds’ exposure to various instruments, operational impact of regulatory changes, or performance of overnight cash investments.
• Assist the Complex Securities Committee in the review, approval, and monitoring of complex instruments or foreign market settlement risk
• Assist Director with preparation of pro-forma financial statements for Fund mergers and other onboarding activities related to Fund launches, mergers, liquidations, and large asset transitions
• Complete documentation required for foreign account openings, maintenance, and tax relief
• Prepare materials to measure cost benefit analysis of programs by creating metrics, gathering information, and tracking progress
• Document procedures and workflows
• Participate in planning meetings with internal and external stakeholders
• Keep current on news and regulatory matters impacting PCS tasks and assist with policy development. Help to implement industry best practices within the department.
• Assist AVP and Fund Administration staff in resolving open issues
• Utilize technology to improve efficiency within the PCS team
• Support internal and external audits
• Participate in risk assessments, operational reviews, and due diligence meetings
• Attend professional conferences representing PCS and report to management team
SKILLS/LICENSING
• Candidate must have strong technical, analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and verbal/written communication skills
• Solid understanding of mutual funds, custodian operations, and audit practices
• Good understanding of the investment management industry and a strong desire to acquire additional industry knowledge
• Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to work with and influence at various levels of the organization and build strong relationships
• Must be able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
• Knowledge of foreign account opening, tax reclaim process, Form N-14, or Regulation S-X is helpful
• Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other computer applications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
• Minimum two years of relevant industry experience in mutual fund operations, asset management, or financial analysis is required. Ideal candidate will demonstrate a progressive increase in responsibilities and understanding of the mutual fund industry.
• Demonstrated ability to work in an environment where procedures and controls are required
• Proven ability to succeed in a team oriented environment
• Demonstrated experience with cash management, security movement, GAAP, SEC and other regulations pertaining to mutual funds, and industry standards
