Job Description
As steward of Allstate’s reputation, the Corporate Relations department works on many fronts to improve and protect that reputation while creating advocates for our brands. We on the Stakeholder Strategic Content team do our part by focusing on how we can most effectively engage and influence our stakeholders.
We’re part of the broader Corporate Storytelling team, so one way we do that is by helping to make sure everything we communicate is part of a single, clear, compelling storyline – about who we are, what we do, where we’re going and why. We have an opportunity to shape that storyline as it evolves and ensure individual topics make sense in that context, intuitively leading toward the same end. And then we also partner with our colleagues to tell our story in a way that resonates with our stakeholders. We use research and insights to empathize with our stakeholders and communicate with them in a way that helps us achieve our goals.
Key Responsibilities
A powerful storyteller and perceptive thought partner, the Stakeholder Strategic Content lead consultant draws upon exceptional skills and talent as a writer, editor and strategic thinker to cultivate that single, living, breathing storyline and move our stakeholders toward targeted outcomes.
This involves providing counsel, building tools and helping to shape and craft content (foundational narratives, articles, videos, speeches, etc.). Through this partnership and support, the lead consultant helps ensure communications to our stakeholders:
• have an authentic voice
• approach topics from the audience’s perspective
• are easy – and a pleasure – to read, see or hear
• avoid corporate jargon, canned messages and buzzwords
• don’t force the audience to connect dots, decipher lingo, trudge through messaging, hunt for relevant information or memorize lists and labels
• make sense in the context of the corporate storyline
• represent the best way to tell the story to achieve an audience outcome
Job Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related field strongly preferred
• Truly exceptional skills and talent as a writer and editor (with a minimum of five years of professional experience specifically as a writer/editor)
• An extraordinary aptitude for storytelling and for grounding otherwise complex concepts in accessible context
• A well-developed respect for the power of voice in writing and an impressive flair for infusing writing with character and personality
• Intuitive understanding of audience perspective and ability to use that understanding to most effectively engage and influence an audience
• A predilection for innovative thinking around new ways of presenting, packaging and delivering information and communications
• An insightful grasp of strategy and a resourceful knack for preserving editorial integrity while meeting strategic communication goals
• Solid expertise in core journalistic competencies (e.g., gathering and synthesizing information)
• Superior organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks and juggle multiple projects at once while maintaining the highest standards of quality
• Perceptive problem-solving capabilities and strong interpersonal acuity, combined with the ability to keep cool under pressure and manage challenging personalities with aplomb
• Confidence to provide (in a forthright manner) and stand behind counsel, even in the face of skepticism or discomfort – and the maturity and wisdom to know how hard and far to push
• A thick skin for the inherent complexities of a corporate environment
• Proven success in project management and unwavering dedication to consistently hitting deadlines
• A solid reputation as a dependable and enthusiastic team player who can just as deftly work independently
• An abhorrence of grammatical errors and inconsistencies (and of the “no one will notice/care” approach); in fact, grammatical perfectionism should be second nature
• Thorough knowledge of Associated Press style
