DESCRIPTION
New York Life is seeking a senior-level PR strategist who is passionate about helping the media understand how families and business owners can achieve financial security, and creating opportunities for New York Life to drive and participate in public conversations on financial planning and the role of expert guidance.
The right person for this position will be seasoned in personal finance and insurance topics and how to connect them to current events; experienced in developing thoughtful consumer research and surveys that engage the media; and capable of convening diverse groups of stakeholders to build high-impact, multifaceted PR programs that bring to life the value New York Life delivers to its clients.
This role reports to the head of External Communications (part of the company's Corporate Communications department) and includes oversight of PR agency resources.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Work closely with the leadership of the company’s core business (the Insurance and Agency Group) to develop and execute PR strategies that support their business and marketing objectives, and New York Life’s corporate reputation.
• Create and oversee a calendar of strategic earned media initiatives that incorporate thought leadership, executive spokespersons, consumer advice, and original research and surveys.
• Maximize the reach and effectiveness of PR programs by collaborating with New York Life teams overseeing digital and social media content, employee and agent communications, and other engagement channels.
• Evaluate and measure the effectiveness of external communications programs, using data and analytics to strengthen the planning and execution of future PR initiatives.
• Monitor news and trends within the industry and in the personal finance space to identify, understand and leverage emerging issues.
• Develop and maintain key relationships with top-tier business and personal finance media.
• Brief senior leaders in advance of all media interviews, and serve as an external spokesperson as required.
• Manage PR agency budgets and resources.
REQUIREMENTS
• Minimum of ten years public relations, communications and media relations experience, including several years of experience in leading public relations initiatives around personal finance topics, products and services, preferably insurance-related, at a management level.
• Proven media relations skills and relationships with top-tier media; track record of placing news in major publications.
• Fluency in strategic consumer research for media relations purposes, including survey types and methodologies, pattern recognition and basic analytics.
• Strong understanding of digital and social media tools and channels and strategies, as they relate to consumer engagement, and ability to influence strategies and content
• Demonstrated knowledge and interest in newsworthy personal finance trends, issues, milestones and events.
• Outstanding writing ability and excellent presentation skills.
• Ability to interact with and influence all levels of an organization.
• Reputation for integrity and ethical business practices.
• A self-motivated, team player approach, able to lead communications programs that achieve common objectives across organizational lines.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher.
