Description
Job Purpose
The Senior External Communications Specialist initiates and executes tactics associated with the external communications programs, with a focus on media relations.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
• Works as part of a team to secure positive, relevant media coverage of Jackson.
• Build relationships with key reporters, research/monitor industry publications and trends, develop story pitches, proactively pitch media, prep Jackson spokespersons and coordinate interviews
• Writes and edits communications deliverables such as press releases, bylined articles, newsletter articles, messaging documents, internal and external website content, media pitches, project plans, executive updates and other projects, as assigned.
• Implements a bylined article placement program, working with internal and external content authors as well as editors at news outlets to secure publication.
• Maintains a project management calendar to track media relations outreach, deadlines and pending/secured coverage on behalf of the media relations team.
• Tracks media coverage and prepares results reports; compiles and distributes annual media highlight clipbook.
• Creates and maintains media distribution lists using Cision, other tools and independent research.
• Works with vendors, contractors and agencies to implement projects and ensure that goals are achieved and deadlines are met.
• Utilizes Web-based tools such as BusinessWire and a compliance content management system.
• Compiles and distributes Daily Articles email with relevant industry news.
• Updates and distributes company fact sheets.
• Occasionally represents the company at community, industry and/or internal meetings and events.
• Helps to coordinate internal company meetings and events as needed.
• Manages awards program to secure recognition for the company and for individual leaders; works with internal teams and SMEs to write compelling nomination and award submission content.
• Conducts research projects as assigned.

Qualifications
Job Responsibilites (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
• Knowledge of public relations and media outreach strategies and best practices.
• Solid verbal and written communications skills.
• Writing skills: style and grammar proficiency and experience writing business and journalistic content.
• Adherence to AP Style.
• Working knowledge of the financial services industry and a desire to increase expertise in this area.
• Business acumen with aptitude to develop strategic thinking and planning abilities.
• Understanding of other communications (social media, internal communications) and marketing disciplines to support cross-functional marketing communications initiatives.
• Ability to manage and drive progress on multiple projects at the same time, often to support multiple internal leaders or business units.
• Strong organizational, project management and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
• Ability to be both analytical and creative to solve problems and deliver results/meet project objectives.
• Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Education and Experience Required
• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications or English or related degree required.
• 5+ years of experience in a Communication role required.
• Media relations experience required.
• Agency and/or financial industry experience preferred.
