Work closely with business leaders to identify, prioritize and document business requirements; recommend technology solution alternatives; and participate in the roadmap planning process. Provide architectural/engineering leadership and oversight (understand business drivers and strategies to ensure alignment with IT and business direction). Oversee SDLC discipline and continuously mature SDLC processes via metrics.
Responsibilities
JOBCOMPLEXITY: Evaluate alternatives, identify the costs and benefits of implementing system solution alternatives, and apply conceptualization and creative thinking skills toward possible solutions with a bias for creativity, sufficiency, lower TCO, quality, and high delivery velocity. Understand SIC business applications landscape and lead the evolution of applications to meet changing business needs.
Partner with project managers, PMO leaders, and business partners on the development of project plans, and participate in the execution of projects to ensure adherence to goals and business needs. Provide technical/engineering oversight on projects (includes participating in project meetings, 1-1s with team members, defining technical approach, etc.)
Create/Review/Approve engineering deliverables (system architecture, technical configuration/customization, non-functional requirements/testing, application support plans).
Drive the prioritization of business requests for application enhancements and oversee the delivery of these change requests via the maintenance process. Maintain good throughput of maintenance through a monthly release cadence and effective metrics (cycle time, quality, productivity, capacity). Set effective maintenance throughput targets between business enhancements, break-fix, and perfective maintenance. Leverage the maintenance process to keep application assets stable, available, and secure. Continuously evaluate and score applications for level of risk they pose. Identify application assets that have a high risk score and bring them to acceptable thresholds via maintenance efforts or larger project sized initiatives
INTERACTION: Work closely with business leaders to identify, prioritize and document business requirements; recommend technology solution alternatives; and participate in the roadmap planning process. Manage business partner expectations regarding business applications solutions, drive and influence adherence to target state architecture.
Negotiate with vendors on SOWs, project technical approach, roles and responsibilities. Represent Business Applications Engineering team on Infrastructure or Security-focused projects. Manage IBM, CTS, and other vendors on the maintenance process by setting goals and overseeing delivery to maintenance targets via a maintenance governance process.
For high priority incidents, coordinate business applications/vendor team response with ITES, ensure right engineers are engaged and collaborating toward resolution, assist with triage and impact assessment, and ensure that end user and executive communications are being sent regularly. Participate in incident post mortems, challenge team on root cause, identify what needs improvement, assign and follow up on action items. Identify needed changes, review and approve change requests. Support IBM AMS team in efforts to improve our operational maturity (e.g., incident reduction, perfective maintenance, security, stability, availability of applications). Monitor support queues and follow up on open tickets to ensure proper response, satisfactory resolution, and SLA compliance. Provide leadership during high priority incidents and where necessary serve as liaison between engineering teams, vendors, and business partners
SUPERVISION: People Manager for Business Applications Engineering team including hiring, performance management, compensation planning. Resource Manager for Business Applications Engineering team including labor capacity planning and assigning resources to PMO-managed projects; smaller engineering enhancements, upgrades, maintenance requests, and operational tasks/activities. Manage vendors including nurturing relationships, escalating when needed, vendor evaluation/selection, evaluating alternatives (build versus buy). Set internal team goals to ensure employee development, knowledge transfer, and cross-training. Promote collaboration, transparency and effective cross-functional partnerships within team and across IT teams. Establish positive team culture and dynamics, and foster employee satisfaction and retention through strong leadership by example.
Ensure project teams are staffed optimally with the right number of resources and skills. Choose optimal development strategy (insource/hybrid/outsource) to support project needs.
Manage budgets at team level, work with Corporate Financial Services to review variances regularly, forecast and accrue spends, and assist management chain of command in annual budgeting process. Review vendor invoices for accuracy
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree required with a major in either Management Information Systems or Computer Science.
Experience: Typically requires minimum 8 – 10 years experience within IT and 3+ years experience managing IT employees, or the equivalent combination of education/experience.
