• Manages multiple complex quantitative analysis projects with client-facing interactions, in order to deliver natural peril expertise and portfolio recommendations to colleagues and clients.
• Reviews complex maps and scripts completed by other project team members to finalize client deliverables and provide natural peril expertise to clients.
• Prepares summaries, presentations and reports for multiple complex client projects in order to communicate findings to internal and external clients.
• Manages complex internal client relationships and develops business by meeting regularly with internal and external clients to discuss new analyses and R&D products.
• Guides the development of modeling products/advisory tools to further business objectives.
• Is an industry-recognized expert in modeling certain hazards or perils and is able to support the development of staff members as well as the development of business and intellectual capital in such areas in order to achieve business objectives.
• Develops scientific publications and other thought leadership and may present at industry conferences in order to develop intellectual capital and achieve business goals.
GC CAT Risk Studio (NY): Catastrophe Risk Research Manager
Guy Carpenter, a leading international reinsurance broker, is looking for a Catastrophe Risk Research Manager to join its New York office and support catastrophe risk research operations. This position will be part of the GC CAT Risk Studio (CRS) group, a small, entrepreneurial team building innovative applications in the area of catastrophe risk modelling. We are looking for analytical thinkers with a passion for applied research to join our interdisciplinary team. The successful candidate will report to the CRS Lead and will work closely with colleagues to support CRS activities worldwide with an emphasis on the development and commercialization of parametric (re)insurance solutions.
Primary duties and responsibilities include:
• Assist CRS' Lead in the management of a new, global parametric (re)insurance initiative
• Manage day-to-day R&D operations within said initiative
• Occasionally participate in commercialization activities and marketing
• Construct, test, and validate numerical model prototypes independently
• Perform research and collect scientific datasets pertaining to natural hazards risk
• Process raw data into formats compatible with our systems
• Communicate scientific concepts, methods and results to technical & non-technical audiences
• Pursue and maintain relationships with our scientific research collaborators
• Liaise with our team of software developers to guide the product design process
• Meet with clients to present GC's parametric offerings and understand our clients' needs
• Co-author scientific papers as required
Qualifications
A successful candidate will possess:
• A degree in the natural sciences, engineering, or similar technical background (PhD preferred)
• Not strictly required but highly desirable:
• Experience in the development or analysis of parametric (re)insurance solutions
• Experience with optimization algorithms
• Experience with earthquake models, seismology, or earthquake engineering problems
• Excellent analytical skills
• Ability to program independently in a technical language such as R, Python or MATLAB
• Ability to problem solve and communicate clearly (candidates will be asked to deliver a 20 minute research presentation on a topic of their choosing followed by a Q&A from the team)
• Excellent writing skills and documentation discipline (published scientific papers preferred)
• Some experience managing projects and small teams preferred
• Ability to work in a formal, global business environment Familiarity with web programming, internet systems, and/or web design a plus
• Some travel required (5% - 10%).
About CRS:
Coordinates a network of 20+ research institutions that provide scientific information on natural hazards and risk around the world
Deploys its research, knowledge and advice through modern internet-based web applications and by providing traditional consulting services
Advises our reinsurance and insurance clients on financial risk arising from these catastrophes by leveraging our research and web applications
Also heavily involved in the design of parametric insurance solutions, such as CAT bonds and other Insurance-Linked Securities
