As the Sr. Manager of Consumer PR, you and your team directly influence the awareness, consideration, and perceptions that customers have of CUNA Mutual Group’s consumer brands, products and services. The consumer brands of CUNA Mutual are focused on developing products, solutions and services that help hard-working families build and achieve financial security.
This role is accountable for developing, executing and measuring the success of consumer-facing PR and social media strategies and programs, including the creation of a proactive, earned media strategy for national, regional and local media. This role also serves as the company’s spokesperson for consumer media (available 24/7), manages and holds agency partners accountable, and leads the day-to-day team to deliver results that drive the business forward.
The ideal candidate will have strong existing consumer media relationships and a proven track record of securing consumer media placements targeting specific audiences for starter and challenger brands. The ability to collaborate across several internal teams, including corporate and B2B media relations, media, channels, communications, subject matter experts, and senior executives is also required. The ability to lead by example with a positive attitude and thrive in a fast-paced, agile environment is a must. Prior consumer crisis communication experience is preferred.
Your work will focus on:
• People leadership. You will be accountable for leading, coaching and building your team and agency partners into a results-oriented, high-performing team, accountable for building and executing the organization’s first broad consumer PR strategy.
• Serving as the primary advisor to the Vice President of Consumer Brand, other senior-level executives, peers and cross-functional teams, on media strategies and best practices required to establish CUNA Mutual Group’s consumer brands as trusted solutions to help our customers build financial security.
• Developing, maintaining and educating the organization in best practices associated with consumer media, PR, social media and consumer crisis communications.
• Managing and optimizing external agency relationships as an extension of your team– ensuring agency partners are held accountable.
• Collaborating with corporate and B2B PR and social teams to coordinate and align efforts that deliver maximized results on behalf of the enterprise.
Job Responsibilities:
PEOPLE LEADERSHIP
• Drives annual planning on behalf of team and contributes to functional annual plan
• Develops measurable team objectives and success measures

• Conducts regular meetings with team members to provide coaching, ensuring the team reaches its full potential and delivers results on behalf of the organization

• Provides guidance in the development and execution of PR and social media strategies and tactical/executional plans as necessary
• Conducts mid-year and annual reviews
• Recruits as necessary
• Motivates team to create compelling content; ability to uncover creative angles and craft interesting stories.
• Strong communicator who delegates work to team members as appropriate and holds individuals accountable
• Leads by example and conducts themselves with a high degree of integrity
• Educates stakeholders from across the organization on the value of PR and social media
PR / SOCIAL MEDIA
• Lead the consumer PR function within the enterprise
• Partner with leadership, analytics and finance to establish success metrics and reporting cadence(s)
• Manages agency relationships, holding partners accountable to a high-performance standard
• Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with media, increasing awareness of and generating interest in brand offerings, strategic programs product offerings and services
• Managing and facilitating consumer media inquiries and working with the team and partners from across the organization to respond to and meet reporter and editor deadlines
• Develop relationships with key influencers, such as bloggers and industry experts who can help tell our story
• Keep tabs on key beat reporters to identify changes in coverage or new opportunities and improve/maintain team's media lists
• Write and distribute news releases, media pitches, advisories and thought leadership pieces
• Align consumer media efforts with corporate media and social media outreach and internal communication channels to maximize readership and awareness of company news.
• Ensures the team stays up-to-date with knowledge of current events and cultural calendars to increase brand relevance and make recommendations for inclusion in social conversations and media stories
• Leads team members and partners with cross-functional SME’s in the development of PR, social and marketing strategies, and commercialization plans as necessary.
• Develops the objectives and success measures for new initiatives
• Proactively assesses and monitors execution of the plan to ensure effectiveness.
• Identifies and leads the application process for award and recognition opportunities
• Ensures brand adherence and quality assurance
• Participate in the identification of process improvement opportunities
• Ensures necessary reporting and superior communication out to key stakeholders
CRISIS COMMUNICATION
• Problem identification, judgment, resolution and decision-making skills often in ambiguous situations.
• Excellent written communication skills, maintain a high standard during times of extreme time-pressure.
• Assess the severity and priority of multiple incoming inquiries from executive leadership, press, customers and employees.
• Collaborate with multiple stakeholders to work effectively with executives.
• Build cross-functional relationships up, down and across the organization to enable broad cross-company interaction
• Demonstrated capacity to lead others collaboratively, under pressure, in short periods of time.
• The ability to grasp the dynamics of an issue, creatively think through possible approaches and articulate the way in which a situation can be explained and contextualized for various audiences.

Job Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, marketing, journalism or related field.
• 10+ years of relevant experience. Experience in both agency and corporate settings preferred. Experience managing agency partners required
• Prior experience developing and executing consumer PR and social media strategies and programs
• Ability to influence and interact with people at all levels of the organization, building trust and mutual respect with key stakeholders
• Demonstrated ability to drive ideas to execution; someone who is strategic, creative and makes things happen.
• Ability to lead and manage teams in the development and execution of PR and social media strategies, marketing plans/budgets and business case development
• Maintain confidentiality of information
• Strong, compelling and proficient writer with a strong grasp of AP style.
• Practices accountability: say what you do/mean and mean what you say/do.
• Excellent communication, presentation and public speaking skills.
• Experience interacting with executive leadership.
• Innovation and product launch experience preferred.
• Previous consumer marketing experience.
