Vice President on the Credit Strategy Team
Job Description:
The Credit Strategy Team makes allocation decisions for Residential Mortgages, Structured/ABS, Corporate Fundamental, Corporate RV/Trading, Corporate Distressed, and Niche Credit strategies. Additionally, the Credit Strategy Team sources, underwrites and monitors direct positions and co-investments for the Blackstone Strategic Opportunities Fund (BSOF). This role offers the opportunity to analyze, evaluate, and engage with hedge fund managers, underwrite individual trades and risk, and interface with colleagues across the globe.
Responsibilities:
Primary responsibilities will include:
• Working with the team to source and perform due diligence on prospective hedge fund investments within the credit space, with a focus on Residential Mortgages and Structured Credit. This will include meetings with the hedge fund managers, their teams, reference checks, strategy research and quantitative track record analysis.
• Monitoring of existing hedge fund relationships, which include regular conversations with different levels of contacts at the firm, tracking key positions, themes and exposures in the portfolio, assessing the impact of any organizational changes, and continuously challenging the validity of BAAM’s investment thesis.
• Working with BAAM’s Strategic Opportunities team and leading hedge fund managers to source, diligence and underwrite direct and co-investment opportunities, leveraging Blackstone’s various groups where appropriate.
• Structuring transactions for BSOF where the utilization of securitization or creative financing can optimize return potential.
• Developing and utilizing a personal network to source new investments and assist in a deeper understanding of existing investments.
• Thinking creatively about ways to improve the team’s existing due diligence process, helping ensure quality, consistency and thoroughness in their approach.
• Training and mentoring of junior team members.
Qualifications:
Blackstone seeks to hire individuals who are highly motivated, intelligent and have demonstrated excellence in prior endeavors. In addition to strong analytical and quantitative skills, the successful candidate should have:
• Superior communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to write effectively.
• A desire to work in a team environment often under pressure.
• Strong financial modeling skills.
• Experience structuring securitized transactions involving working with rating agencies and legal diligence teams.
• An ability to manage ad hoc projects independently and to completion.
• 7-10 years of relevant work experience at a sell-side structuring or trading desk, or a hedge fund working in the residential mortgage or ABS asset classes.
