Role Value Proposition:

We are seeking an experienced commercial underwriter with a minimum of 3 years of multi-line experience to join our team in Owings Mills, MD. The successful candidate will be responsible for the evaluation, selection and pricing of commercial Auto and Business Owner accounts to ensure the company’s profitability and growth objectives are met. The ideal candidate shall display a proven track record of success in managing a profitable book of business in the independent insurance agency system. They must be able to manage relationships, overcome objections and possess strong communication, organization and computer skills. Insurance designations preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
• Risk Selection: evaluates the business by qualifying accounts; identifying, selecting and assessing risks; determining the premium, policy terms and conditions; obtaining approvals; creating/presenting the proposal to the agent/broker and successfully negotiating deals
• Agent/Broker Relationships: Develops and maintains successful relationships with Agents and Brokers by providing stewardship with service partners.
• Portfolio Management: Manages a book of business by analyzing the portfolio, identifying areas of opportunity for improved growth, profit and diversification, and executing marketing plans to increase market share with preferred brokers.
• Documenting the Deal: Documents files in a way that reflects a solid thought process and decision making through comprehensive account reviews, sign-offs and referrals.
• Leadership: Formally and informally guides, mentors, and coaches underwriters in both technical and professional skills.
• Continuous Improvement: Actively participates in continuous improvement by fully engaging in daily huddles, generating suggestions, following appropriate procedures and work principles, participating in problem solving activities, and using continuous improvement tools to support the work of the team.
• Researches technical underwriting issues and problems in order to provide alternatives and solutions.
• Develops information regarding market conditions and overall industry knowledge. Provides technical assistance and training to develop underwriting personnel.
• Provides Just-in-time technical assistance and on-the-job training to develop underwriting personnel
Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:
Required:
• 3+ years of multi-line commercial underwriting experience, continuing insurance education desired
• Thorough knowledge of commercial insurance coverages, contracts
• Demonstrates understanding of state regulations and the application of underwriting guidelines
• Proficient in the use of personal computers and software programs such as MS Excel and MS Word and MS Outlook
• Effective Oral and written communication skills, and excellent attention to detail
• Hard work, honesty, integrity and unwavering business ethics
• Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field (Math, Economics, Finance, Math/Actuarial Science)
