Profile Summary
The Investment Tax Director will be a leader in Voya’s Corporate Tax Department, a dynamic and fast-paced group focused on driving tax efficiency and providing insightful advice to senior leadership across the company. The Investment Tax Director will lead and strategically manage the Voya Investment Tax Function (VIM Tax) to help maximize the after-tax value of Voya’s approximately $80B investment portfolio, while continuously improving the department’s processes and procedures to manage the increasing demands for quicker and more accurate tax reporting. Responsibilities include: analyzing the tax consequences of Voya’s investment initiatives, proactive involvement in tax structuring and planning, and maintenance and adoption of practices and procedures that will create more efficient and accurate tax reporting. This position will report to the VP Tax, VIM and Planning.
Profile Responsibilities
• Oversee tax reporting for approximately $80 billion of investment assets. Responsibilities include: tracking tax basis, managing capital gains/losses, reviewing book-to-tax adjustments under U.S. GAAP and statutory accounting, reviewing hedging transactions, and reviewing tax provisions.
• Analyze, manage and engage in strategic initiatives related to Voya’s current tax position.
• Supervise and mentor the VIM Tax team.
• Oversee the tax functionality of investment systems such as CAMRA, Findur and Strategy, and evaluate potential migration to new investment accounting systems.
• Act as a tax resource and advisor to investment professionals in analyzing and creating new financial products, vehicles and transactions, including hedge funds.
• Proactively identify and analyze issues related to investment assets.
• Represent VIM Tax in explaining the tax consequences of complex transactions to senior management, the IRS and external auditors.
• Monitor and develop internal controls over income tax reporting processes (Sarbanes Oxley compliance).
• Coordinate across the department on various investment-related tax accounting and return positions.
• Make meaningful contributions to development and training of Corporate Tax Department staff.
• Lead and participate in special projects and/or initiatives, as needed.
• Serve as a liaison to Finance, Accounting, Treasury, Legal, lines of business and other internal customers to ensure appropriate management of tax reporting and risk.
• Other duties and projects as assigned.
Knowledge & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required. CPA and/or master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation preferred.
• A combination of 10+ years of experience in taxation in a large corporate environment (preferably with financial/insurance company) and/or Big 4 accounting firm.
• Significant experience in the accounting and taxation of derivative products (swaps, futures, options, etc.)
• Strong understanding of corporate taxation, accounting for income taxes, and accounting for investments.
• Demonstrated leadership, problem solving, and management experience.
• Proven ability to independently operate in a cross-functional, fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work with asset and portfolio managers to achieve tax goals while also meeting other internal goals of the organization.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage processes and meetings effectively and efficiently.
• Ability to explain complex concepts in a concise way to senior leadership.
• Ability to organize information/workflows and support the Tax Team in developing and implementing technology tools and automation in a high-control environment
• Proficiency in software applications, primarily Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
