Department Profile
The Finance Division reports to the Chief Financial Officer and consists of some 3,000 employees worldwide. Finance protects the Morgan Stanley franchise by serving as guardian of the Firm’s books and records and by contributing to firm wide risk management and risk reduction. This division maintains relationships with Morgan Stanley’s various industry and government regulators and also serves as the conduit of financial information to the outside investment community. Finance plays a critical role as advisor to Morgan Stanley’s various businesses and its senior management team.
Team Profile
The Tax Department reports to the Deputy Chief Financial Officer and consists of some 200 employees worldwide. The Tax Department is responsible for global tax compliance, tax accounting, business unit tax advice and tax planning for the Firm.
The Indirect Tax Group within the Tax Department is seeking a senior Executive Director based in London. The role will report to the head of the Indirect Tax group with the expectation that the appointee will take on the role as head of the group.
The group manages the Firm’s VAT/GST global compliance and advisory functions from London, Budapest, Shanghai and Sydney. The Group advises on product specific issues as well as prepares reviews and/or advises on returns for entities in over 37 countries.
Primary Responsibilities
• Supporting various business units of the Firm by providing tax advice relating to transactions and business lines
• Assisting members of the Morgan Stanley Tax Department on technical tax issues
• Assistance on tax legal issues arising on audit
• Transaction structuring and negotiations
• Firm Tax Planning
• Managing external advisors
• Participating in industry groups and initiatives
• Guiding Finance and other parts of the Firm in respect of the challenges to be faced by the introduction of new VAT systems
• Advising on technical issues relating to the filing of indirect tax returns *LH1-EC
Qualifications
Skills Required
• At least 6 years of indirect tax experience, including experience in financial products taxation, preferably at both a top tier accounting firm and as a head of indirect tax at a bank or equivalent
• Motivated, team oriented self-starter who has the ability to work effectively and efficiently with all levels of personnel, and who is adept at working in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent analytical and communication skills
• Broad based understanding of how indirect tax systems work around the world
• A graduate with a relevant tax or accounting qualification
