External Job Description
The Director, Planning is responsible for achieving and surpassing financial goals by strategically managing/coordinating the planning team. They will create, monitor, and analyze plans and forecasts as well as develop strong individual and team performance.
30% Support the company (financial and other) goals to drive results, through coordination and execution of divisional dollar plans and forecasts:
• Deliver/present divisional top-down strategies and financial plans that support the company goals
• Contingency planning – incorporate customer learning’s, current events, and shifts in consumer behavior into proactive strategy changes
• Proposing solutions to opportunities and liabilities
• Consistent review with team members to make sure everyone is clear of direction and expectations
• Provide input to ensure accurate forecasts
25% Develop and maintain plans to support sound financial strategies:
• Create financially sound season/class plans through: research and analysis of data, appropriate interpretation of historical data, trend analysis, micro merchandising, and strong partnership with team members
• Present strategies
• Consideration of company goals while setting planned strategies
• Coordinate and guide development of plans and strategies with your team of planners
25% OTB/Inventory management:
• Review and provide direction on divisional OTB position and strategies
• Review actuals against plan, performing trend analysis/ladder plans
• Accurately forecast sales and markdowns at a season/class level, incorporating customer learning’s, current events, and shifts in consumer behavior into proactive strategies
• Discuss and communicate forecast with team
• Identify opportunities and participate in development and execution of promotional and markdown strategies
20% Development of direct reports:
• Provide development support to associates by mentoring, sharing knowledge, and providing directions, in order to empower the team and support succession planning
• Delegation of projects
• Encourage/expect/provide opportunities for continuous learning
• Bring them front and center – don’t speak for them
• Encourage risk-taking and learning from both positive and negative outcomes
• Set/support development goals and steps to get there
• Ensure global business goals and direction are clearly communicated and understood
Ongoing Supplemental training and development of planning team:
• Develop training for new associates and ongoing team development
• Develop system training for new enhancements
• Revise process flow for efficiencies and improved execution
• Support succession planning by preparing individuals to take the next career step
• Ensure global business goals are clearly communicated and understood
• Teach and share knowledge
• Set clear direction
Ongoing Create and maintain strong partnerships:
• Ensure that team developed strategic solutions and plan proposals are brought to the table
• Utilize resources
• Provide back-up to our business partners (“be there”)
• Challenge the thinking of others, quickly finding common ground to solve problems with the end customer in mind
• Maintain open communication and partnerships with Merchandising, Allocation, IT, CRM, and AVP/Senior Management
• Remain open minded to different ideas
• Provide and invite feedback
Requirements
Education:
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required
Experience:
• Three years of retail, planning experience required
Skills:
• Strong analytical and organizational skills
• Strategic thinking and decision making skills
• Takes initiative; self-starting
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills and strong ability to form and maintain relationships
• Computer proficient
• Solid understanding of retail math
