Buyer - Tops

ModCloth designs and sells its own exclusive line of private label apparel in a full range of sizes, and curates a unique assortment of fashion from independent designers.

What You’ll Be Doing:
As the Tops Buyer, you'll be responsible for achieving financial and strategic goals of the category - sales, gross margin, days of supply and stock turnover. You will drive keymerchandising strategies in alignment with Sr. Buyer or Merchandise Manager to growmerchandise categories on a consistentand profitablebasis. You will develop these strategies and tactics based on a deep understanding of ModClothbusiness, target customers and the competition. This position requires skill in cross-functional communication and relationship building, as well as excellence in operational execution.
Responsibilities:
• Create seasonal assortment plans for respective category that refer to historical data to inform future decisions
• Manage in-season business by tracking and analyzing sales information in order to identify opportunities to increase sales, improve margins, maximize inventories and improve markdowns
• Accountable for meeting product and category financial sales targets
• Develop and execute overall strategy for growth with new product introductions and strategic expansion of current brands and vendors (PL and Market)
• Develop and manage all aspects of the assortment and be able to articulate a clear point of view around the timing of product flow to create a compelling customer experience
• Analyze and manage all elements of a category to identify areas of opportunity
• Develop merchandising stories/themes and product initiatives that align with key category/classification assortment strategies for ModCloth
• Source and develop new brands that fill an important need gap within the category
• Develop and manage vendor relationships, terms negotiations, including margin, RTV's and samples
• Communicate brand and business opportunities to cross functional partners
• Partner with key cross functional partners to drive a compelling site experience that is fresh and relevant to drive sales results
• Work with Merchandising counterparts to ensure that a cohesive viewpoint transcends departmental lines
• Create and execute clear strategies and tactics to drive volume, customer engagement and profit
• Develop, execute and track weekly, monthly, and quarterly forecasts and results for merchandising and product categories (PL and market)
Receipt Management:
• Approve receipt shifts/cancellations and negotiating additional cost discounts/reduction in units where appropriate
• Responsible for communicating updates to appropriate team members (e.g. marketing team for a campaign item, planner for OTB receipt management)
Build Talent:
• Actively participate in the selection, on-boarding and development of Assistant and Associate Buyers
• Serve as a resource and mentor to train and develop direct reports and/or new associates
• Foster a work environment that embodies the ModCloth values and norms
Requirements:
• 3+ years experience in a buying organization
• Exceptional financial and retail math skills, with ability to have robust conversations with planning counterparts to manipulate levers to drive the business
• Passion for driving business results
• Ability to problem solve and make quick decisions that support the overall company strategy and financial goals
• Acute fashion sense with proven talent to envision and interpret fashion trends for the ModCloth customer
• Stellar communication, presentation, negotiation and influencing skills
• Ability to lead and inspire with unquestionable integrity and trust
• Strong potential to identify, develop and retain top talent
• Flexible to work during off-business hours to support project deadlines
• A creative thinker who is willing to take calculated risks with an ability to source and foster new opportunities to grow the business
