Overview
The Director – Data Science leads the Data Science team in pursuit of continuous innovation and advancement of our data science capabilities to help shape the future of Foot Locker. The leader is expected to evolve the maturity of our machine learning, natural language processing and artificial intelligence capabilities to optimize customer insights, customer experience, personalization and overall business performance. He/she will drive innovation by developing new modeling capabilities and unique intellectual property to differentiate Foot Locker from its competitors.
Additionally, the Data Science leader will provide analytical guidance to internal teams and executive leaders as well as apply their skills and knowledge to highly complex problems. The Director - Data Science role is responsible for developing and driving the long-term data strategy at Foot Locker.
The leader is expected to possess both a breadth and depth of experience and knowledge about the entire Data Science value chain and will serve as the true subject matter expert on all topics related to analytics and data strategy.
Responsibilities
• Clearly connect the company’s strategic vision with analytical processes and outcomes. Ensuring the maximization and continuous delivery of value via analytics.
• Analyzes, understands and builds a comprehensive analytical architecture based around data sources, common data models, business processes, and data products.
• Works closely with the Data Engineering and Product Management teams to align core capabilities around outcomes.
• Researches, designs, and implements Deep Learning algorithms for complex business problems.
• Supports executive leadership by providing resource estimates for major projects along with determining milestones and identifying possible constraints.
• Maintains a current skill set that incorporates leading Data Science techniques.
• Work with stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver solutions.
• Creates the continuously learning road-map for the rest of the department, identifying key strengths and areas to improve overall group skills and cohesion.
• Leads analytical teams to create, validate, and deploy comprehensive solutions to difficult problems.
• Manages the comprehensive portfolio of tools, applications, and processes across all the data teams to ensure a common pattern and adherence to defined best practices.
• Aggressively hires top Data Science talent for Foot Locker. Passionately develops current talent with active role in career development, coaching and mentoring.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director Data Science has direct supervisory responsibilities for 10-15 Data Scientists in a matrix organization structure where Data Scientists are assigned to projects lead by Product Managers.
Qualifications
• A proven track record of developing successful analytic solutions at scale across multiple domains.
• Superior understanding of data/analytical architecture and its supporting systems and processes.
• Can analyze scenarios and apply the appropriate architecture pattern succinctly.
• Expert level proficiency in SQL, R or Python.
• Extensive knowledge of Big Data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, and NoSQL.
• A thorough and comprehensive understanding of statistical modeling, machine learning, and hypothesis testing.
• Familiarity with popular Deep Learning frameworks such as Tensorflow, Keras, or Caffe.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and an innate ability to convey complex topics effectively to broad audiences.
• Experience working with AI, Machine Learning and Deep Learning technologies.
• A contagious passion for all things analytics.
• Experience mentoring team members and building capability through influence.
• A demonstrated history of continuous leadership development and leading effective teams.
• Experience managing large projects involving cross-functional teams.
• Direct experience with retail and eCommerce business models.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Masters Degree or PhD. in a Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or otherwise research-based field; 7-10 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
The candidate must be able to communicate with others in a simple, clear, and understandable manner. Must also have the ability to read and interpret all forms of communication. The ability to write reports for management and professional correspondence, as well as to speak effectively before peers, management, customers, and other associates of the organization is required.
REASONING ABILITY
The candidate must effectively plan and execute unusual and difficult work. Takes initiative and is decisive and quick, when appropriate, all while adhering to the team’s standards and patterns and practices. Must have the ability to solve complex problems and deal with ambiguity where only limited standardization exists.
