POSITION SUMMARY:
The Undergraduate Communications Design Department in the School of Design at Pratt Institute invites applications for two full-time, tenure track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2018. Housed alongside the Graduate Communications Design Department on Pratt’s historic 25-acre campus in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, the department is a recognized leader in the field and currently offers a BFA in Communications Design.
The successful candidates will demonstrate expertise in the practice, history and theory of communication design and with historical and critical perspectives on contemporary communication design including issues surrounding globalism, sustainability, technological advancement, equity and inclusion. Candidates must display a commitment to pedagogical innovation and curricular development as well as the ability to teach across a wide range of courses that engage current and emerging platforms, skills and literacies in contemporary communication design practice. Candidates’ professional or scholarly focus may include a broad set of interests and applications within graphic, interaction, experiential and trans disciplinary design including but not limited to digital storytelling, networked communication and augmented/virtual reality.
A commitment to teaching and education as well as a strong record of professional achievement that includes professional practice, contemporary scholarship and creative activity in the field of communication design are required. The successful candidates will be invested in collaborating with other disciplines and departments within the institute. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Teach required undergraduate communications design courses as well as electives in the candidate's area of expertise
• Maintain active and recognized professional practice, research/scholarship and creative activity
• Actively participate in departmental and institutional service, including committee work and academic support services including, but not limited to, curricular coordination and development, curricular assessment, supervision of student organizations, student advising and recruitment activities.
• Embrace new forms of critically engaged practice and pedagogy and contribute to the development of a strong culture of design scholarship, research and innovation in the department
• Build interdisciplinary collaborations both inside and outside the School of Design and liaise with the Graduate Communication Design Department
• Perform all other related activities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
An MFA or MDes in communication design, visual communication, graphic design, interactive design, or related discipline is required.
Experience:
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching with a minimum of 2 years experience at the undergraduate level
• 2-5 years of recognized, current professional practice and/or creative scholarship in the field of communication design
• Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
• Excellent collaborator with management and leadership skills: ability to meet deadlines and communicate effectively
• Understanding of historical and critical perspectives on contemporary communication design including issues surrounding globalism, sustainability, technological advancement, and equity and inclusion
• Expertise in a broad range of methodologies, concepts, techniques and technology related to contemporary communication design practice
Recommended:
• Demonstrated ability to work with other faculty and students on interdisciplinary/collaborative projects
