Description
MISSION:
Elevates the Converse product experience with a focus on both the art & science of materials.
FOCUS:
Brings to life the seasonal category creative direction through material design that is trend relevant to the category consumer.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
PRODUCT:
Uses advanced design skills to create original material designs that appropriately reflect Converse's Design ethos, are trend right, consistently incorporate consumer insights through powerful storytelling, emotional connectivity and relevance.
Handles new materials techpacks.
Plans and executes the product details and reviews all samples, troubleshoots achievability issues and clearly communicates changes to ensure timely completion of each project.
Works with design management and category team members in design, development, and merchandising to ensure feasibility of designs, meeting price points, merchandising needs, product creation dates/gates are met, design tools are effectively utilized and cross-functional teamwork occurs as appropriate.
Collaborates with Divisional Material Lead to create key seasonal concepts.
Supports category innovation.
Builds awareness of current material trends, through fashion, art, design and related products through market research to keep abreast of consumer needs.
Provides materials support for design team as needed outside of assigned product load.
PEOPLE/PROCESS:
Works collaboratively with other functions within the Design Studio including Trend, Footwear, Graphic and Color Design.
Clearly communicates with members in Design, Development, and Product Management to ensure consensus on material direction, merchandising needs and product creation timelines.
Produces presentation materials and communicates design concepts to various departments. Participates in activities that increase understanding and working knowledge of products, product lines, product development process, commercialization process, and the specific markets in which Converse does business.
Participates in forum with category consumers to deepen consumer insights for product classifications.
Consistently demonstrates process proficiency through best practices, visualization and communication of ideas, and Digital Tools.
Engaged in emerging manufacturing and material advancements.
Utilizes strong understanding of material technology and most materials types.
Maintains healthy cross-functional relationships and builds matrix relationships outside of immediate team.
Presentation & Communication: Clear, Concise, and thoughtful delivery (verbal, written, visual, listening).
Qualifications
Minimum of 6 years progressively technically challenging materials design experience. Demonstrated knowledge of Macintosh computers using PhotoShop and Illustrator. Knowledge of CAD programs, preferably in Mac environment. Understanding of materials trends, fabric characteristics, materials compatibility, and materials placement. Knowledge of product design and development process. Familiarity with product manufacturing processes including: materials/fabrics; plastics; pigments. Strong verbal, written, visual, and high-profile communication skills in local market language, including meeting facilitation and presentations. Ability to understand challenges or underlying concerns, share ideas, and develop effective responses or elevate to higher management. Ability to work independently and cooperatively in a diverse group. Ability to network, influence, and utilize internal and external resources.
