Job Summary
Highly visible position focused on building the capability of the function and ensuring a comprehensive view to pricing strategy and price realization is established and maintained which maximizes gross profit delivery and enables gross margin expansion. The individual manages a Pricing Strategy team and leads the development and execution of pricing strategies in a highly dynamic business environment. Serves as a key strategic partner to Brand Leaders guiding the integration of brand and pricing strategies. Serves as a key thought partner and influencer to BU Presidents, Brand GM’s, and Sales leaders to prioritize and guide long-range strategy development and short-term optimization, delivering profitable and sustainable top and bottom line growth. Works closely with cross-functional partners to include Brand Marketing, Business Development, Field Sales, Finance, and Procurement. Objectives include; net price realization, gross margin percentage and gross profit dollar improvement and people development metrics.
Position Responsibilities
• Build the Future of Pricing Stategy:
◦ Contributes to establishing and maintaining the vision for Pricing Strategy function
◦ Defines and ensures continuous improvement of pricing processes
◦ Develops tools to enhance and integrate descriptive and predictive demand and financial analytics to optimize and streamline the pricing scenario development and decision-making process. Owns software, spreadsheets, models and other programs used for pricing decisions
◦ Develops reporting and visualization tools to effectively communicate pricing strategies and monitor “in-market” execution
◦ Seek out and incorporate leading Pricing Strategy practices and capabilities from inside and outside food and consumer packed goods industries
◦ Recruits, hires and develops a team with collective expertise to manage all strategic, operational, tactical, and administrative elements of Pricing Strategy
• Deliver Foundational Pricing Strategies and Analytics:
◦ Partner with Brand and Business Development teams to define the role of pricing in categories, ensure alignment to brand objectives and consideration of competitor pricing and promotion strategies. Key elements of strategy include:
# Targeting of key consumer/shopper segments relevant to pricing (e.g., value = opening price point)
# Category price structure (current and future brand positioning within the category, desired gaps with branded competitors and private label)
# Suggested retail pricing (e.g., SRP, EDLP pricing, Promoted Pricing)
# List price strategy (unit price and discount curves in support of suggested retail pricing across channels, pricing tiers)
# Price/pack architecture (price/value curve / price per volume incentive curve across pack sizes)
# Trade strategies (e.g., national promotion strategies and price points)
◦ Contribure to new item/innovation strategy (pricing and promotion strategy throughout lifecycle across customer channels)
◦ Maintain multi-year pricing roadmap encompassing all above aspects of pricing strategy, updated on an annual or as needed basis
• Ensure Pricing Strategy Execution
◦ Drives execution of pricing strategy and monitors results for consistency with strategy, long and short-term profitability and growth objectives. Key elements of execution include:
# Establishing a clear view of pricing conditions, defining when pricing changes should be considered based on changes in competitive market, internal cost or external commodity market inflation
# Setting strategy and performance KPI’s and tracking/reporting on a regular basis to ensure compliance and drive corrective actions (e.g., price realization, market price alignment and price strategy compliance)
# Maintaining awareness of external market changes and conditions that may affect pricing
# Applying advanced analytics and statistical tools to model pricing actions and ensuring “in-market” and financial implications of pricing scenarios are clearly understood by decision makers
# Contributes to the development of “selling stories” for Field Sales team in collaboration with Brand and Business Development team for all pricing actions
◦ Acting as a resource to internal customers, specifically the brand teams, based on intimate knowledge of brands, categories and customers
◦ Partnering closely with Brand, Sales, Finance, and Procurement on agreed upon strategies, programs and decision-making
Position Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with emphasis in business, economics, finance and/or accounting; MBA or other discipline that requires quantitative knowledge/CPA preferred
• 10+ years of business experience, some preferably spent in Consumer packaged goods pricing; Ideally with experience in Marketing or Sales
• Experience managing and developing a team of individuals at varying levels
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills – Proven ability to work with multiple teams and influence cross-functional partners at levels senior to him or her, as well as actively participate in meetings and group discussions with individuals from various parts of the organization (e.g., Sales, Marketing, Finance)
• Entrepreneurial skills and style
• Leadership skills – demonstrated significant initiative, tenacity and leadership in prior job experience
• Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrate an ability to understand complex issues rapidly
• Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplined, cross-functional and collaborative team environment
