Director of Packaging R&D
The Director of Packaging R&D is responsible for leading the team responsible for the development, testing, and validation of all new raw materials and packages. The team will be accountable for developing innovative and creative packaging solutions which meet the needs and requirements of our customers, consumers, manufacturing teams, and quality teams. This group will be responsible for developing the specifications for all primary and secondary package components, along with finished goods and transportation-related materials. The team’s overall focus will be on reducing packaging costs through light-weighting and material optimization, reducing defect rates, improving product safety, and finding ways to make our packages run more efficiently on our production lines.
Detailed Description
• Responsible for the design and testing of all packaging components for new water and beverage products based on customer, supply-chain, manufacturing requirements
• Recommend, develop, coordinate, and implement packaging changes, modifications, or developments for productivity improvements, quality improvements, cost savings, and new product development
• Responsible for maintaining a single source of truth for all packaging specifications, product drawings, and testing data, and communicate this information to all internal customers who need visibility to this information (Sales, Quality, Manufacturing, Commercialization)
• Partner with the commercialization and sales teams to specify customer requirements, supply chain requirements, and manufacturing requirements for each new project or product launch requiring new packaging
• Develop a comprehensive package of product specifications, approved drawings, and testing data to provide to the commercialization, quality, and manufacturing teams prior to new product commissioning
• Provide technical support and assistance to the manufacturing and quality teams to troubleshoot and fix packaging quality issues
• Responsible for identifying and conducting 3rd party packaging validation required by customers to ensure product safety through the supply chain (ISTA-E, 6SAMS, etc.)
• Prioritize the project queue to efficiently deliver the maximum value by allocating the proper resources to the most important high-value and urgent projects
• Identify optimal pallet patterns and bottle geometries for all new products
• Investigate new technologies and packaging innovations to streamline product or process and expand our manufacturing capabilities
• Test and validate any new raw material which is changed or supplied by a new vendor
• Develop detailed project scopes, budgets, requirements, and timelines
• Travel requirement of 25% to 50%

Competencies
• Strong technical capacity and understanding of the bottling process (injection molding, blow molding, filling, packaging) with a focus on PET and HDPE materials
• Knowledge of industry packaging standards and best practices
• Understanding of requirements and design considerations for various beverage products including water, teas, CSD beverages, isotonics, aseptically filled products, etc.
