Job Summary
The Director of Category Leadership is responsible for improving category merchandising, assortment, pricing and shelving (MAPS) at assigned customers. The Director joins the sales team in penetrating key customer decision makers to present category development plans, and collaborates with headquarter Category Strategy, Insights, Analytics and Customer Strategy & Planning teams in the development of category plans for assigned customers. Responsible for new item presentation, category business reviews, and all aspects of shelving products in a category friendly way. Responsible for identifying opportunities to improve competitive advantage and enhancing stature with the customer.
Position Responsibilities
• Share ownership of customer interface at the category level with Sales, with focus on improving customer and company sales and profits
• Work effectively with Sales, Marketing, Shopper Marketing, Insights, Brand, and other Category Leadership resources to execute category initiatives with excellence
• Effectively customize and simplify corporate materials for assigned customers
• Assist the sales team with category long range planning with customers
• Lead shopper and brand based and Category Leadership initiatives with the customers
• Develop tools to diagnose new category opportunities
• Deliver consumer/category input within customer strategic planning process to help refine plan elements based on consumer and category knowledge
• Improve field sales capability to leverage analytics and insights
• Partner with the sales team to construct and deliver clear, concise, insights driven customer presentations
• Monitor industry trends and competitive activity to identify opportunities to improve capabilities and advantage in the market
• Improve shelf position for our brands while maintaining a shopper/category first approach
• Be an expert on the business – customer, department, key categories, brands and SKUs
• Be the subject matter expert on assigned customer team for analytical tools, space management software and data (understand and master customer loyalty card data, 84.51, IRI, Nielsen, Assortman, Willard Bishop, Mintel, NPD)
Position Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required
• Communication, presentation building and delivery and negotiation skills
• Data integration and interpretation experience – tell the story
• Problem solving skills – creative thinking
• Analytical and critical thinking skills – analytical curiosity
• Be very proactive and possess a self-starting nature
• Have the ability to lead a group of cross functional team members
• Be a strong project manager – establish objectives, process, roles, timeline and desired outcome
• Ability to quickly analyze data from multiple sources and understand complex trends
• Synthesize a holistic sales story from multiple sources of data (syndicated, loyalty, consumer and industry trends)
• Experience working directly with customers in growing category sales
• Must possess solid knowledge of computers, MS Office Suite, Nielsen/IRI, customer scanner and loyalty card data, space management tools, graphics, spreadsheets, and databases
• Knowledgeable about syndicated scan and panel data including geo-demographic and behavioral data
• Strong working knowledge and application of data analytics and consumer insights
• Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities, provide actionable insights and relevant recommendations
• Be able to “mine” the data to uncover “root” causes of trends and deliver concise analysis
• Working knowledge of retail merchandising and in store execution tactics
• Develop and present comprehensive, concise and objective category reviews incorporating shopper, consumer, retailer, syndicated and loyalty data
• Demonstrated ability to work in a highly matrixed environment and collaborate with various cross functional areas
• Show well-developed organizational, communication and time management skills
• Ability to prioritize/manage multiple projects at once
