The Director Materials and Planning is responsible for developing and executing procurement sourcing and supply strategies of paper and plastic packaging, MRO, contracted services, non-perishable materials, and other indirect spend categories. The position’s other key area of responsibility is all Sales & Operations Planning: monthly, weekly, and daily, including forecasting of customer demand for monthly financial planning and Ag (raw) supply 18 months into future, granular forecasting of daily demand for manufacturing scheduling, scheduling of internal and external manufacturing, and providing ag supply with what to harvest of raw materials. The position leads organization in delivering raw, finished goods, and packaging waste reduction and is critical partner with Ag Supply in managing and reducing disced acre (walk-by-acre) costs. The position orchestrates customer fill rate and lean supply chain costs by organizing flow: customer orders, ordering and flowing raw product from ranches to plant, scheduling manufacturing, and flowing customer orders to warehouse.
The Director is responsible for recommending procurement strategies, obtaining buy-in from key internal customers, including senior management and updating those customers on the status of each procurement decision. This role is also responsible for supplier material planning (replenishment) and inventory management supporting production at internal and external manufacturing plants and harvest managers
The Director is responsible for developing and executing collaborative forecasting between Sales and Operations for all 3 business segments – salads, commodities, and frozen. This forecast is critically important: it is the basis for all financial commitments (forecasts), determines the $100MM+ agricultural plantings by leaf type, and drives daily manufacturing scheduling and has a huge influence on customer fill rate results. Planning team fields stream of customer requests and complaints and is responsible for finding customer solutions that maintain efficient flow within EBF’s supply chain.
SCOPE:
• Approximately $80 million annually from domestic and international sources
• Team of 3-5 sourcing and materials management (replenishment) staff; 8 manufacturing, deployment, and co-pack scheduling staff; and 3 demand planners
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Understand Earthbound Farm packaging and indirect spend categories and supplier base.
• Develop/recommend procurement strategies for packaging and other indirect categories
• Execute agreed procurement strategies with EBF-approved suppliers
• Obtain from suppliers industry-leading turnaround times on new product introductions and innovation
• Identify and implement procurement cost savings projects
• Work with R&D/QA to develop new suppliers, raw materials and products
• Negotiate contracts for categories managed and other key supplier relationships
• Maintain standard costs in Earthbound’s enterprise system SAP
• Effectively manage supplier inventories and schedules to support manufacturing requirements
• Create supplier scorecards and use them to manage supplier performance
• Organize monthly S&OP demand forecasting and supply planning meetings for salads, commodities, and frozen businesses
• Use monthly S&OP process to drive financial forecasts, agricultural requirements determination and oversupply/undersupply monitoring, and form basis for daily forecasting that drives manufacturing scheduling
• Organize weekly and daily meetings between agriculture, quality, manufacturing, warehouse, customer service, planning, etc.
• Ensure flow from ranch to raw receiving, receiving to manufacturing, manufacturing to warehousing, and customers’ orders (lead times, order days, etc.) delivers cost targets and service objectives
• Deliver customer service targets – monitor and course correct daily/weekly
• Ensure processes and information flows deliver raw, finished goods, packaging, disced acre, and distressed sales waste reduction targets
• Manage processes and systems to ensure customers receive customer-required, or better, shelf life
• Field customers’ service and sales’ requests and find solutions that keep customers satisfied while making operations efficient
• Make business case for and implement systems to improve productivity of team, reduce errors, and increase accuracy, examples include demand forecasting, MRP, production scheduling, etc.
JOBS SUPERVISED:
• Direct reports: Demand planning manager, Sourcing manager, Product supply manager
• Indirect reports: Buyer/Analyst, material/replenishment planners, production schedulers, raw supply schedulers/planners, and demand planners
Preferred Candidate Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Business or related fields required
• Master’s degree preferred
• Minimum 10+ years of experience in Supply Chain/Operations function within food industry, with strong preference for produce, including at least 5+ years of experience of people leadership in managing procurement and planning teams
• Experience working with multiple internal customers/business units
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Develop and lead a team of capable procurement and supply professionals who are engaged, well trained, developed and focused on the expected business results they must deliver
• Ability to lead cross-functional teams to champion change throughout the organization
• Ability to plan/communicate/present and execute complex procurement strategies and influence senior management at all stages
• Demonstrate ability to work within a cross-functional matrix environment where responsibilities are layered throughout the organization
• Knowledge of contract management and resolution procedures
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
NON ESSENTIAL:
• Knowledge of SAP systems
