The Product Planning, Development, and Marketing Group includes all the functional areas that work together to develop instructional materials that meet current pedagogical and market needs for PreK-12. Content is developed for a wide range of media formats, including interactive digital media as well as print. Colleagues within PDM have varying expertise including the following: subject-matter expertise across all academic subject areas, design, art and photo management, production management, quality assurance, content engineering, and permissions and licensing.
HMH is looking for a Technical Production Company website role supports the content development process by formatting text, creating iterative templates from existing models, both print and digital, performing QC checks on application and PDF files. The Technical Production Specialist oversees the development of content and materials for Basal and Assessment programs. Has advanced proficiency with content authoring, creation of illustrative and tech art, page/screen composition software and technologies, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat Pro, InCopy, InMath, HTML5, CSS and IPS. The Technical Production Specialist works independently in compliance with established procedures/oversight by senior staff to accomplish tasks. The Technical Production Specialist works with internal development staff to resolve discrepancies related to page/product completion.
Primary Responsibilities
Technical Production Services
• Ensure that all template/pattern construction, supporting documentation, and production processes adhere to established best practices.
• Compose pages and develop illustrations and tech art using a variety of production software tools and technologies.
• Create project templates and ASPs to meet ongoing needs of program/ product.
• Direct/manage the creation of templates/patterns and produce materials and content to published guidelines and specifications.
• Review template construction for adherence to published best practices and production processes, and remediate as necessary to achieve desired standard outputs.
• Work with project template/pattern libraries and sample pages/screens; modify these as required to deliver on-going needs of programs/product.
Processes, Standards, & Documentation
• Lead, drive, participate in and contribute to the development of processes and standards for functional area.
• Drive quality through adherence to, and supporting best practice processes and procedures, including the maintenance of documentation on shared file systems.
• Strategize, plan, and implement improvement initiatives (e.g. methodologies and documentation) for functional area.
Excellence in Execution
• Risk and Issues Management - identify issues/events that may impact resources, schedule, budget, scope and/or delivery. Escalate risks and issues to appropriate parties in a timely manner and provide recommendations on problem solving and solutioning of same.
• Ensure adherence to established strategy and best practice development, process, file server management, and quality deliverables.
• Provide functional/technical expertise and troubleshoot on projects throughout production lifecycle.
Effective Communication & Collaboration
• Articulate clear, meaningful program/product status, highlighting progress made, risks and issues, milestone accomplishments; including improvements in innovation, simplicity, and quality.
• Establish collaborative program/product partnerships with cross-functional peers and external partners to accomplish program/product goals.
• Monitor progress of program/product assignments; coordinating updates and working closely with cross-functional peers in order to drive product development efforts forward.
• Participate fully in scrum rituals including: sprint planning, daily scrums, demos, sprint reviews and retrospectives for assigned program/product development efforts.
Simplicity, Quality, & Innovation
• Continuous Improvement - demonstrate a continuous improvement philosophy throughout the product development lifecycle, identifying areas for improvement including product features, process, etc. in pursuit of simplicity, quality and innovation.
Vendor Management
• Assist vendors in the use of new templates, guidelines and specifications, processes, or software.
Education and Experience
• BS/BA degree; Associated degree or related work experience
Knowledge and Skills
• 4+ years experience in page composition and digital production
• 2+ years experience with authoring/ composition systems and related technologies
• Production workflow experience in print/ digital technologies
Other requirements
• Basal print and/or digital product creation
• Awareness of content authoring, integrated publishing systems, file store and page/ screen composition technology
• Position requires solid organizational skills, effective written and verbal communication capabilities, proficiency in technical/computer-related tasks and effective problem solving skills
Physical Requirements
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
