Technical Director, Animation (Mocap)
The Technical Director, Animation (Mocap) ensures that all technical aspects of a performance capture shoot are considered and addressed at all stages of production. They will develop tools and processes that will be used throughout the production process, and will continue to expand and explore new methods and technologies to continue to achieve high end results.
Type of position: Permanent
Responsibilities:
The main and routine tasks of the Technical Director, Animation (Mocap) are to:
• Develop tools for performance capture pipeline;
• Continue development on tracking/solving/retargeting workflow;
• Rig characters – facial and body;
• R&D – Facial Capture and retargeting;
• Test assets (character rigs, facial rigs, sets etc.);
• Liaise with rigging and animation departments to provide asset feedback prior to shoots;
• Test Vicon camera layout and set-up for optimal capture;
• Provide data post processing support (characterizing, building actors, setting up props, etc.);
• Continuously looks for ways to improve post processing pipeline efficiency;
• Ensure all data adheres to studio standards (format & quality);
• Communicate technical constraints and their rationales to the mocap team on a regular basis;
• Carry out all other related tasks.
Experience/Skills:
• Proficiency with programming languages specifically Python, C#, Javascript;
• In-depth knowledge of Blade, Motionbuilder, Maya and 3ds Max;
• Strong understanding of motion capture pipelines;
• Strong understanding of rigging (body and facial);
• Experience with facial capture and retargeting;
• Experience with Vicon motion capture system;
• Strong understanding of virtual production;
• Strong understanding of time code;
• Strong problem solving skills;
• Must be able to work in a team environment.
Relevant Experience:
• 5-10yrs+ years gaming and/or feature film experience within motion capture discipline
Other Skills:
• Good organizational skills;
• Good communication skills (spoken and written);
• Teaching skills;
• Customer focus;
• Writing skills (technical documents);
• Work well as part of a team.
