The Open Source Technology Operations team is responsible for delivering eLearning services to over a thousand clients comprising almost 4 million users worldwide and includes support, administration and client liaison. The Systems Administrator will play an integral role in the success of the group.
Specifically s/he will:
• Maintain solutions for fault, performance, capacity, and configuration management for applications. Will work in tightly focused teams to identify efficient, centralised solutions.
• Identify production stability concerns via break point and impact analysis. Implement remediation plans to address.
• Design, develop, and implement documentation or tools appropriate to the maintenance of application platforms.
• Provide Tier 2 support to issues escalated from Technical Support team. Interface with development teams to resolve Tier 3 ‘in code’ issues. On-call support for escalated off-hours issues.
• Identify opportunity for automation of aforementioned activities. Look for synergies within the production environment from the perspective of complexity, cost, and maintenance activity reduction.
• Execution and maintenance of internal SLAs developed with business stakeholders.
• Fulfill technical service requests.
• Maintain a high degree of involvement with development and architecture teams regarding application needs or repercussions of infrastructure changes.
• Support of Sales and Service stakeholders.
Whilst being a technical role, the position involves a considerable amount of communication with both external and internal clients.
The successful candidate will be someone who is willing to take challenges and responsibilities on-board, and provide continuous input into how the Open Source Technology Operations team can further improve and deliver upon its client services.
Professional Qualifications
Required Skills:
• Customer focused.
• Linux operating systems expertise. Should be familiar with HA configurations, security and patch management and general *nix administration.
• Strong scripting experience to produce solutions and perform troubleshooting.
• Strong grasp of Internet network concepts, protocols and associated services (TCP/IP, HTTP, SFTP, SCP, DNS).
• Strong grasp of relational databases and SQL. Candidate must be capable enough in SQL to author data extraction and transformation queries for the purpose of troubleshooting and remediating database related.
• Intermediate PHP coding.
• Strong understanding of application development. Ideal candidate will have some implementation experience in a 3rd or 4th generation language, be capable of understanding and deconstructing program flow, and be conversant with developers on design and implementation options. Familiar with source management tools such as Git and/or Subversion.
• Understanding of SDLC practices, including requirements gathering, design, impact analysis, implementation, testing, deployment, remediation and operation.
• Strong, methodical troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to maintain own workflow, prioritises with respect to departmental or organisational priorities, and complete work with minimal supervision. Requires strong organisational habits and time management skills.
• Ability to respond to frequent demands of multiple customers (internal and external).
• Ability to respond to frequent pressure to meet deadlines when work speed and sustained accuracy are paramount.
• Ability to meet attendance standards and provide off-hours operational support.
• Strong communication (both verbal and written) and customer service skills. Ability to exchange information with technical and non-technical individuals in a clear and concise manner.
• Ability to work harmoniously and effectively as part of a team
Preferred Skills:
• Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent commercial experience
• Experience with configuration and automation tools like Puppet, Chef or CFEngine
• Experience with code review and continuous integration tools.
• Experience working with highly virtualised environments.
• Experience working in or with a University, TAFE or RTO desirable
• Programming skills with Ruby and JavaScript/nodejs an advantage
• Familiarity with ITIL incident, problem and change management processes an advantage
• Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent commercial experience
