Job Description Summary

The Supervising Producer, Education will help launch Company Society’s educational video effort, and manage the project into the future. She or he will oversee the creation of both original and repurposed videos across all phases of production including research, writing, shooting, production, video editing, motion graphics and music composition. The Supervising Producer manages a team of producers and editors, and collaborates with the NGS Education Department to ensure that all videos meet the requirements of the larger NGS Education Initiative. She or he maintains a long-term production schedule to coordinate multiple production workflows. The Supervising Producer reports directly to the Director of Impact Video.
Responsibilities
• Project Management:Under the supervision of the Director, maintain a long-term production schedule to coordinate multiple production workflows. Manage all aspects of production, including scheduling, creating and managing project budgets, hiring and managing external vendors and contractors, and overseeing producers, associate producers and editors to ensure all projects deliver on time and on budget. Ensure all projects are fully completed, including making sure media deliverables are archived and all paperwork has been correctly filed. (25%)
• Development:Develop and pilot formats for educational videos, and lead the testing of these videos in designated target audience groups. Gather data that describes the effectiveness of a variety of video styles and make recommendations for new approaches in response to the data. (25%)
• Strategy:Applying previous knowledge of education video production to work with the education team and the Director, Impact Media on crafting a strategic vision of how best to use video to achieve the goals of the education department - answering what is the best content to create in order to provide effective tools to teachers that are also engaging to students. (10%)
• Producing:Oversee the writing and producing of a variety educational videos, including original productions and video reversions. Guide internal clients through the entire production process, shaping stories, and managing the client relationship. Direct producers in shoot preparation to ensure shoots are productive and meet the project’s goals. Manage edit sessions, review video cuts, and oversee associate producers in collecting stock footage and other assets. (25%)
• Staff Management:Managing a team of Producers, Editors, Associate Producers and Assistant Editors through the pre-production, production and post production of all Education video creation. Mentors less experienced members of the team. (15%)
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in television and film production
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
10 years experience writing and producing educational video content. Proven success communicating difficult scientific concepts to a lay audience, particularly teachers and students. At least 5 years of management experience.
Knowledge and Skill Required
The successful candidate will have a proven record of ambitious, creative, innovative visual storytelling, particularly to communicate science, culture, and geography to educators and students. She or he will possess professional management abilities and as well as proven success leading the operations of educational media production. Shooting and editing knowledge are a must, with proficiency in Adobe Premiere editing software being highly desirable. Must be able to work well as a part of a team, as well as independently. Must have the ability to prioritize workflows and strong attention to detail. Excellent written, verbal, communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills are required. The successful candidate should have experience creating new video production workflows if necessary, and be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
