The Sr. Sourcing Manager (SSM) is responsible for strategically sourcing HMH product development work with suppliers who deliver quality product within budget and on schedule. They manage the bid process with suppliers, negotiates final rates, and initiates contracts. The SSM has a thorough understanding of the product development process, both print and digital, including the intricacies of educational publishing. The SSM is responsible for understanding project interdependencies and basic workflows so that components that are dependent on one another are placed with partners in a sensible way. They develop and maintain relationships with strategic partners, utilizing standard operating processes with our partners and/or the contingent workforce.
Primary responsibilities:
1) Understands project scope: Thorough understanding of SoW documents, product guidelines, content development processes, and workflows. Informs and improves our suppliers' understanding of tasks and scope when bidding for work or regarding change in scope. Participates in discussions with Studio Leads and Finance to ensure SoW details all supplier tasks, deliverables, and quality expectations so that our internal customers are satisfied with the work performed and that the suppliers' efforts match the allocated budget.
2) External Resource Planning: Makes recommendations to Studio Leads as to which suppliers make the best fit for the project based on own knowledge, previous feedback, and past experiences of suppliers' strengths and capabilities for requested tasks. Collaborates with the sourcing team to understand which suppliers are unavailable or underperforming in order to make appropriate assignments based on current supplier capacity and their previous performance.
3) Supplier Sourcing: Possesses a "track record" of managing successful, complex assignments; manages several projects simultaneously. Develops a sourcing plan for assigned projects. Manages the bidding process in order to obtain an advantage of quality, cost, or schedule. Proposes alternatives to traditional sourcing, and/or new types of relationships/agreements with our suppliers. Awards and manages suppliers to ensure they perform work that accurately represents the tasks required of them.
4) Negotiation and Budget Management: Ensures an overall 100% adherence to budget and strives for negotiated savings against initial bids. Exhibits excellent level of knowledge of industry best practices in contract negotiation. Exhibits the ability to prepare and effectively lead negotiation sessions. Actively supports the Change Order review process, and as required negotiates rates for out of scope work to ensure approval and compliance. Participates in supplier pricing methods, rate cards, and pricing methodologies. Manages final invoices through completion of project.
5) Customer Focus: Manages and builds positive relationships across the Sourcing team with suppliers and PDM Studios. Sets up the supplier for success by ensuring they have a full understanding of the assignment and all relevant materials before the launch. Provides and solicits feedback early and often from all stakeholders throughout the project. Advocates for the supplier while looking out for HMH's interests in an effort to be transparent and fair to all concerned parties.
Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business or relevant discipline
• 4+ years of educational publishing experience, or relevant equivalent experience
• 4+ years of sourcing experience or relevant equivalent experience with learning solutions for the K–12 market
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
