Responsibilities
NBC News Technology Team is in the process of breathing new life into its flagship brands - NBC News, TODAY and MSNBC. The mission of the NBC News Technology Team is to translate the strategic vision of these core brands into delightful and engaging user experiences across web, mobile, video and emerging spaces building brand-consistent mobile and desktop application experiences.
Political Coverage and Elections is a key element in the portfolio of all of our brands. Competitive analysis of polling information, accurate analysis of voting results and dissemination of this information is a hallmark of Company’s Emmy winning news coverage, across all platforms.
As a Sr. Developer with the Elections and Political Technology Team you will be key in helping deliver best in class technology to our various political analysts. As a small, powerful agile team with a close relationship to our business partners, we are in a position to respond quickly to the ever-changing political landscape and the demanding requirements of our customers.
Job Duties
Write clean, well-organized, well documented code in response to the requirements of the elections unit in the NEAT and other related applications.
During functional testing and election night operations be able to monitor and respond in real-time to any operational issues related to the system
Collaborate with other teams to provide relevant data to down-stream platforms via WebService APIs
Understand the technical landscape and lend a voice in the relevancy to our technology suite.
Work collaboratively with other highly skilled developers
Evaluate new requests and make reasonable assessments of those requests.
Work with a highly skilled, highly functioning user base consisting of technical and non-technical people to develop clear, complete, implementable specifications.
Qualifications/Requirements
Basic Qualifications
BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physics or a related field
Scala and functional programming skills
Knowledge of actor-based concurrent and fault tolerant applications
Object-oriented design concepts and common design patterns
Understanding of distributed and micro service architectures.
Understanding of NodeJS
Understanding of ZeroMQ
Familiarity with NoSQL database such as MongoDB
Clean, well-organized relational database and query design
HTTP and data communications knowledge (DNS, TCP/IP)
Knowledge of JVM Servlet programming and asynchronous features
Able to work with JSON and XML for RESTful web services
Able to work conservatively with an existing code base without harming the function of existing features.
Able to monitor and troubleshoot complex multi-server JVM applications in a mission critical environment.
Basic Linux, Apache HTTPd, and Tomcat configuration
Linux system command line tools and scripting
Unit testing skills with common testing libraries (such as ScalaTest, Specs2, JUnit 4)
Ability to work in a highly stressful and demanding operation environment under pressure to perform – first time right.
