As a member of Blackboard’s development team within Product Development Engineering group, the Software Engineer is responsible for development and maintenance of applications and components within Blackboard’s Learn product line. This person will be required to learn the product platforms and underlying system components. Software development activities in the engineering group primarily include research, design, coding, documenting and testing of platform and feature enhancements. Activities in this entry-level position will primarily include resolution and testing of defects reported by customers or Quality Assurance. Java experience / knowledge is a plus. This position will concentrate on the maintenance and development of web based and information-reporting systems.
Professional Responsibilities:
• Apply object-oriented design principles, industry best practices (e.g. design patterns) and company policies and procedures to design and implement changes for web-based applications.
• Learn quickly and develop creative solutions, encompassing software integration, performance, reliability, manageability and security
• The Software Engineer receives their assignments from a Development Manager, Project Manager or Lead Engineer.
• These assignments relate to system research, design, development and defect resolution.
• Interacts with other Engineering personnel as well as with Product Management, Project Management, Quality Assurance, Technical Support and Customer Support personnel in order to complete their job responsibilities.
• Also works with other Engineering personnel to ensure consistency among products.
• May contribute to significant decisions regarding technical approach to problems presented.
• Work in teams with our software engineers and managers, product managers, project managers, quality analysts, and automation engineers to develop the next generation of our e-learning products
• Gain exposure and experience in various aspects of the software development life cycle and to Blackboard’s processes and methodologies for building software products
• Use the latest technologies, tools, and techniques.
• Apply knowledge and skills gained in school to building real-world products.
• Shape the future of eLearning by helping develop the next generation of products
Professional Qualifications:
• Working towards a 4 year Computer Science degree or equivalent Programming degree.
• 0-3 years of application development experience.
• Has experience with Java, SQL
• Must possess excellent analytical and problem solving skills
• Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in teams
• Must be passionate about building software
• Knowledge, exposure, and/or experience through academic or professional work in the following is highly desirable:
◦ Software Engineering Principles
◦ Database Design
◦ Web application development with MVC framework (preferably in Java/J2EE with Struts/ or Spring)
