Job Description
The Huffington Post UK is seeking a social media writer to join our news and politics team to help boost our current affairs coverage, as part of our mission to take journalism beyond the usual left/right coverage.
Working in a fast-paced news environment, the successful applicant will be plugged into the social media zeitgeist and constantly be on the hunt for unique angles to the big issues of the day. You'll love working within the viral internet and not be afraid to cover news in a different way, including creating lists, videos and quizzes, but also be comfortable covering more traditional breaking news.
You will have reporting experience and have a record of bringing coverage to life with flair, intelligence and imagination both on and off site, including using platforms like Facebook Live, Instagram Stories and SnapChat. You’ll will be able to articulate the bigger picture, yet capable of tackling the detail, as well as identifying trending news and spotting quirky or offbeat stories that others miss.
You will know how to make stories go viral, write brilliant headlines and use all types of content, including video, gifs and other rich social assets, to tell the most important stories in the most timely and compelling way. The successful candidate will understand how the social web is changing news, while not losing sight of the enduring value of telling news stories with the highest standards of rigour and insight.
The role will play a part in shaping our political social media presence and be able to act on analytics and internal reporting, including understanding traffic targets to help grow audiences and engagement - both on and off site. The successful candidate will help plan social media coverage around daily, weekly and monthly events, working closely with the news desk, including taking part in the daily news meetings.
In addition to being an expert in spotting and anticipating trends, you'll also be able to oversee the day-to-day running of social media accounts, making sure content is distributed to as wider audience as possible with the right tone and character. You’ll be someone who’s interested in politics and understands what it takes to make people laugh and share content on social media.
The Huffington Post has a genuinely global reach far beyond most traditional news organisations, all the time breaking new ground from winning the first online Pulitzer Prizes to leading the way with 'What's Working' solutions-based journalism. We pride ourselves on playing away from the pack and getting behind the headlines, as well as making them. From the Duchess of Cambridge guest-editing our special issue on children's mental health, to our coverage of what's really going on in Westminster and beyond, HuffPost UK is unafraid of doing things differently.
