The Good News
Company is the world's leading Internet TV network. We have more than 75 million members in virtually every country watching billions of hours of content a month; and we're just getting started! We have an Emmy-winning engineering organization that's reinventing the way people around the world discover, watch, and share TV shows and movies. Most importantly, we are a loved brand because we put our members first.
The Problem
We don't just deal with huge scale, we deal with a huge diversity of scale. We run thousands of applications on tens of thousands of servers. We serve hundreds of thousands of TV shows and movies to millions of customers on thousands of device families, all of which are evolving daily.
The Insight Engineering group builds systems providing real-time operational insight to hundreds of engineers, and everyone else who cares about our service, at Company. Our software engineers work directly with their customers, partners, and peers to understand their needs and collaboratively build some of the biggest, most reliable, high-performance distributed systems at Company and in the world. We build products for the long-term, focusing on reusability, extendability, sustainable development practices and velocity. Our large scale means we get to -- have to -- deeply and broadly know infrastructure, especially AWS cloud infrastructure.
As we continue to grow our product portfolio, we look to increase our ability to push the state of the art in useful, effective, insight systems, and are looking to hire a Senior Software Engineer to join an already-formed, cohesive, team. This isn't just about more bandwidth -- rather, we want to hire someone who'll bring something new, and ineffable, to the team which we could not, and would not have predicted. We're looking for someone who'll help us be great, and point out both where we're not, and what we should do about it.
We need you to ...
• Be deeply proficient in server-side software development
• Have a demonstrated track record in building large-scale, highly resilient, distributed REST-based services
• Have a deep knowledge of concurrency (preferably in Java or Scala), resiliency, caching, HTTP and REST
• Understand, and deeply focus on, the real-world benefit your systems and products will have on your customers;
• Be driven by, and bias toward, autonomy. No one will assign you tickets here or mandate what you work on this week -- You'll work directly with your coworkers and customers to figure out what's important
• Be deeply interested in the long-term view. Yes, we need to deliver value this month and this quarter, but our problem domain will grow dramatically over time. Figure out where we need to be in a year and identify how we'll get there incrementally, while helping us manage and constrain technical debt and other forms of unnecessary complications which will in the long run serve us poorly;
• Have great verbal and written communication skills
We'd love for you to …
• Have a significant background in functional or reactive programming, preferably in Java or Scala
• Be passionate about observability, monitoring, and understanding how being able to measure something is necessary, but not sufficient, for managing it well
• Be familiar and comfortable with cloud-like infrastructure environments (AWS, GCP, Azure) or very large scale datacenter environments (e.g. Google, Facebook)
• Be fluent in Linux: CentOS, Fedora, or Ubuntu
Sharing Is Caring
In this group, you'll have an opportunity to build distributed systems that are cutting edge, highly usable, and foundational. Because of Company's strong desire to contribute to open source technology and share technology and concepts, you'll be in the rare position of both working on this and speaking about it publicly, sharing this knowledge with your peers outside Company. We think this is unique to Company, and if it sounds amazing to you… we should talk.
