Job Introduction
Company World Service is an international multimedia broadcaster, delivering a wide range of language and regional services on radio, TV, online and social networks. It uses multiple platforms to reach its weekly audience of 320 million globally, including shortwave, AM, FM, digital satellite and cable channels.
As part of a plan to open new radio broadcasts and online news offers, the Company World Service is establishing a Korean language programme.
The service is tasked with reporting on current affairs and key events on the Korean Peninsula, the neighbouring countries and the Koreans around the world.
Applicants for all the roles in this new service must have first-hand experience in working in broadcast media relevant to either South or North Korean current affairs, excellent written and spoken language skills in Korean language.
We are looking for an experienced and innovative journalist with managerial experience to take up the role of desk editor based in Seoul to oversee the outputs in the bureau there as well as commissioning material from a number of freelance reporters or contributors, in Korean and English.
Role Responsibility
To be responsible for duty editing of early outputs for Company Korean Service in Seoul -8 hours ahead of London – in consistency with established Company editorial brand values and principles.
To ensure that Company Korean output remains the point of reference in international and regional news, through the publication of first-rate, creative content relevant to the target audience.
To manage the Seoul Team in a close working relationship with WS Future Media and prioritise multimedia innovation and interactivity on the Service’s website. To follow closely technological developments affecting the site’s operations.
To keep abreast of new media and delivery developments to ensure that the Service makes the best uses of all opportunities and adapts working practices, using resources efficiently and maintaining editorial coherence.
To liaise closely and constructively with other departments in the World Service Group, particularly News Online, Newsroom, Newsgathering, and other News and current affairs output area.
To provide advice to other Company departments on Korean current affairs. This may involve participation in the output of other Company departments.
To work closely with the Regional Editor and Senior News Reporter in Seoul, Editors of other language services in East Asia to ensure that there is coherence in the news agenda across all platforms and that information, money and staff are utilised effectively and efficiently. To play a key role in further integrating output across all platforms
To be editorially responsible for all the content published on social media platforms, and to work closely with the special production team in the Service to explore more opportunities of interacting with audiences.
To support Asia Region’s management in the recruitment of staff, setting objectives and appraisal.
To travel as required on overseas duty assignments.
The Ideal Candidate
A track record of success in leading a team for editorial purposes in broadcast and online industries.
Fluency in both written and spoken Korean as first language or equivalent, excellent English language skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
Extensive up-to-date knowledge of the Korean Peninsula and East Asia, in particular its political trends, as well as social and cultural developments, its media market and the changing needs of the audience.
Demonstrable knowledge of North Korean affairs is essential.
Sound understanding of international news and current affairs.
Proven editorial judgement and creative content production skills and a track record in initiating exciting content ideas.
Proven experience of staff management, motivation and appropriate deployment of staff with a variety of backgrounds to work in new ways in a rapidly changing multi-skilled environment.
A willingness to develop a solid knowledge of how emerging technology can most effectively be harnessed.
Demonstrable energy and enthusiasm for online technology, especially social media.
Ability to work well and calmly in an environment where news is constantly changing and being updated and have the temperament to enjoy the process.
Experience of managing human resources in the team with a commitment to achieving the most efficient and cost effective use of man power.
Ability to contribute to Company World Service regional strategy and an understanding of the technological changes taking place in the media industry.
Ability to adapt and manage changes in the face of rapidly changing environment.
Awareness of Health and Safety policies and practice in an output area.
